Objectives

In the face of the ongoing climate crisis, young people from marginalized and disadvantaged backgrounds often find themselves excluded from critical conversations about environmental sustainability and climate action. Despite being among the generations most affected by climate change, youth from economically disadvantaged, rural, or minority communities rarely have the resources, opportunities, or platforms to engage with these pressing issues. This project aims to address the lack of representation of these young people in both environmental action and storytelling. By empowering them with the tools of photography and storytelling, we can enable them to share their perspectives on the effects of climate change and its intersection with social exclusion. The DiscoverEU platform, which offers youth the opportunity to travel and explore different cultures, will provide a unique space for these young people to actively engage with environmental themes while learning from diverse communities across Europe. The main objectives of this project are to promote social inclusion by involving young people aged 18-21 with fewer opportunities, particularly those from disadvantaged, rural, or minority backgrounds. Traveling through DiscoverEU will provide these youth with an opportunity to explore diverse regions affected by climate change, witness both the negative and positive environmental impacts, and use their personal stories to highlight the intersection of climate issues and social challenges. In doing so, we aim to foster greater environmental awareness and empower young people with a platform to showcase their perspectives. Photography will serve as a powerful medium to document environmental changes and local solutions, enabling participants to create personal narratives that reflect how climate change impacts their daily lives, communities, and cultures. By emphasizing eco-storytelling, this project aims to help young people find their voices and contribute to larger environmental conversations, ultimately helping to foster a sense of agency and ownership over their futures. Additionally, we aim to tackle several pressing needs related to educational and professional empowerment. Many young people from marginalized backgrounds face barriers to acquiring the skills necessary for personal and professional development, including those related to digital media, photography, and storytelling. Through this project, we intend to provide training and hands-on experience in photography, digital storytelling, and environmental education. These skills will not only enhance the participants' self-expression and creative capacity but will also serve as valuable tools for career development, opening up potential pathways in the creative industries, environmental advocacy, and digital media sectors. By engaging young people with fewer opportunities in these educational and creative activities, we are promoting inclusion while fostering skills that will benefit them both personally and professionally. In doing so, the project aims to equip them with the tools to advocate for themselves and their communities, strengthening their role as active citizens in Europe’s environmental and social future.
