The "Rhythms of Europe: A Cultural Journey Through Music and Dance" project aims to address several critical issues related to youth inclusion and the promotion of intercultural dialogue. In Europe, youth with fewer opportunities, particularly those from marginalized or economically disadvantaged backgrounds, often face significant barriers in accessing cultural exchange programs and opportunities for international learning. According to the European Commission, around 22% of young Europeans aged 15-29 are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, and this figure is even higher in certain regions, with youth in rural or economically disadvantaged areas facing limited opportunities for travel and cultural experiences. For these young people, social and economic factors can create divides that prevent them from engaging in cross-cultural exchanges, which can reinforce stereotypes, contribute to social exclusion, and limit their ability to appreciate the diverse cultures that exist across Europe. This lack of exposure to other cultures can hinder personal growth, reduce social cohesion, and perpetuate a sense of isolation and division. In light of this, the project aims to bridge these gaps by providing an accessible and inclusive cultural learning experience for youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the chance to travel, collaborate, and learn from different European cultures through music and dance. The project also seeks to address the problem of cultural isolation and lack of intercultural understanding. Research from the Eurobarometer shows that a large percentage of Europeans (over 60%) believe that intercultural dialogue is crucial to building a united, peaceful Europe, yet many young people remain disconnected from diverse cultural experiences due to geographical, social, or economic limitations. This disconnection is particularly apparent among youth with fewer opportunities, who may not have the resources to engage with other cultures or participate in educational travel programs. With only 10% of young people in Europe having participated in an Erasmus+ program by 2020, and many others unable to access international opportunities due to financial barriers, the need for inclusive cultural projects that target these groups is urgent. By offering an inclusive, hands-on approach to cultural exchange through music and dance, this project will help fill the gap and offer youth with fewer opportunities the chance to engage with other cultures, acquire new skills, and build relationships with peers from different backgrounds. Music and dance are particularly valuable tools for inclusion, as they transcend language barriers and offer universal platforms for creative expression and dialogue. Ultimately, the project's goal is to foster greater social inclusion, understanding, and cohesion among Europe’s diverse youth population. By traveling together and participating in shared cultural experiences, participants will not only learn about traditional music and dance but also gain a deeper appreciation for the ways in which cultural identity is shaped by historical and social contexts. Given the prevalence of youth exclusion and the challenges posed by economic and social inequalities, this project is designed to provide meaningful, lasting change by offering young people the tools they need to connect across differences and to become more engaged, tolerant citizens. According to a study by the European Youth Forum, intercultural exchange initiatives can enhance tolerance and promote social cohesion, particularly when young people are given the space and opportunity to learn directly from one another. This project will create such an opportunity, allowing youth with fewer opportunities to experience cultural diversity in a safe, supportive environment, and to contribute to the building of a more inclusive and harmonious European society.
