Democracy and inclusive democratic participationEnvironment and climate changeBridging intercultural, intergenerational and social divide

Objectives

This project aimed to give young people a real chance to grow, connect and make a difference, using the rural village of Pano Arodes in the Laona–Akamas region of Cyprus as a living laboratory. During last 30 years the region faces depopulation, limited youth opportunities, environmental pressures such as waste and illegal dumping, and the risk of losing traditional houses, local festivals and living heritage if young people continue to leave. In this context we wanted to create a safe, inspiring space where young participants from Cyprus, Latvia and Estonia could explore what it means to take part in democratic life, care for the planet and celebrate cultural diversity, with a strong focus on those with fewer opportunities from rural, social or economic backgrounds. At the same time the project aimed to bridge social and intercultural divides by bringing together youth from three countries and an ageing rural community in Laona region of Cyprus. From a youth work perspective, the project was built on non‑formal education, experiential learning and peer‑to‑peer interaction, showing that learning is not only about school but about real experiences, teamwork and practical knowledge. It was also clearly linked to the European Youth Goals. Youth Goal 1 “Connecting EU with youth” was addressed by helping participants experience European values like democracy, inclusion and sustainability in practice and feel part of the European youth community. Youth Goal 3 “Inclusive societies” guided our strong focus on young people with fewer opportunities and on creating a safe, welcoming group where everyone’s voice could be heard. Youth Goal 10 “Sustainable green Europe” was reflected in our environmental actions in the Laona–Akamas area and in the promotion of concrete eco‑friendly habits. Youth Goal 4 “Information and constructive dialogue” inspired our use of methods like the “Occaterra” role‑play and structured discussions to build critical thinking and democratic dialogue. These Youth Goals are directly reflected in the three main topics of the project: -democracy and inclusive participation, -environment and climate change, -bridging intercultural and social divides Our objectives, in line with the original application, were to: - Encourage democratic participation, using interactive methods like the Occaterra simulation game and meetings with local authorities, so that young people understand decision‑making, experience policy discussions and feel able to join youth councils and local initiatives. - Promote environmental responsibility by placing the youth exchange in a rural, environmentally sensitive area and engaging participants in hands‑on sustainability activities such as clean‑ups, nature conservation and waste‑reduction workshops, helping them integrate eco‑friendly habits into daily life. - Foster cultural expression and intercultural dialogue through performances at local festivals and intercultural evenings, giving participants space to express themselves creatively while exploring different cultural traditions and values. - Ensure inclusion and diversity by making at least 50% of participants young people with fewer opportunities, providing additional mentoring and tailored support so that those facing geographical, economic or social barriers have equal access to international learning. - Build long‑term cooperation between organisations in Cyprus, Latvia and Estonia, strengthening international networks so that young people and youth organisations can continue collaborating on future projects. The project was about helping young people find their voice, connect with others and gain confidence in shaping their own futures, while at the same time revitalising a rural region by bringing back youth activity, environmental care and intercultural energy.
