Active Zone Outdoor is a Cyprus Youth NGO that operates in the broader field of sport, outdoor and environmental activities with remarkably positive impact on local, national and European level. The last five years a number of projects on the national level, related to youth policy and ocean literacy coordinated by AZO, revealed the unfamiliarity of youth with the climate change impact on the marine environment and the consequences of human activity on our sea. Recent research conducted in cooperation with other partner organisations from MED countries, Italy, Greece, Spain, Malta, Portugal, addressed to young people within our networks, showed that even if young people have grown up with a more visible display of climate change impacts and constant access to information from social media, still, they lack of basic information of how biodiversity is threatened, how marine protected areas support conservation and which parallel actions are needed to successfully provide resilience to climate change. However, young people are convinced for a drastic change and social transformation towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible behavior and committed community strategic plans. All these conclusions lead us to propose the “SAVE MED SEA: Youth On A Mission for a Sustainable Marine and Coastal Environment in Mediterranean Sea”, Youth Exchange project to be realized in Cyprus, under the coordination of Active Zone Outdoor and which will bring together 37 young people including 2 people with visual disabilities from 6 EU Med countries, Cyprus, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Greece and Spain to live, share, experience, learn and develop together. Young people living in Mediterranean countries, active in the youth sector as well as coming from NGOs focused on environmental and outdoor education will get together, exchange best practices, share their experiences, gain a variety of knowledge, and cultivate values and attitudes that promote environmentally sustainable practices and decision-making in their lives, their communities and their organizations. Main aim of the “Save Med Sea” youth exchange is to raise awareness about how climate and environmental change affect marine biodiversity in Med countries, how Med Marine Protected Areas can be an effective tool to protect and manage marine biodiversity, as well as develop sustainable and environmentally responsible behavior through innovative practices and parallel actions to protect marine life. “Save Med Sea” objectives are: 1. to raise awareness on young people and communities on climate change and its impact on marine ecosystems. 2. to increase consciousness about human activities impact on marine and coastal environment in Med sea 3. to exploit environmental and outdoor education aiming to develop green skills among youth to accelerate climate action and protection of marine life 4. to promote interaction with sea and coastal environment and create an alternative path for youth to enhance better mental health and wellbeing 5. to highlight the significance of marine conservation and to create space for sharing good practices aiming to facilitate behavioural change and societal support. 6. to promote intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and respectful exchange amongst young people by using environmental learning as the main vehicle for the communication of such values 7. to create the next generation of young leaders on marine life protection that will increase their ability to develop sea responsible behavior and respect 8. to develop the Toolkit of Mission4MedSea with 5 best innovative practices and ‘Save Med Sea Protocol’ to be exploited for their youth work 9. to spread information about EU opportunities for youth and to develop further cooperation of partner organizations in the field of environmental education.
