The internet empowers all aspects of human nature, and that includes the unattractive ones: we are simultaneously giving people unprecedented access to knowledge while contending with a rapid increase in misinformation. The media space has become part of our lives since the 2000 s, but especially in the lives of young people born practically in the digital age The increasing popularity of online media and social media channels have revolutionized the way that society, now perceived as global, communicates, interacts and shares information and opinions. The project “Empowering Youth in the Fight Against Disinformation” gathers 49 youngsters( 6 participants aged 18-30 and one group leader per group) from 7 courtiers for a 8-day youth exchange in Agros, Cyprus for discussing and addressing the necessity of media literacy promotion among the young people. The Cypriot partner based on the needs identified during the youth work, particularly, by discovering that the media bias and understanding of the media sources was a growing challenge initiated the project. The partner organizations supported the idea of the Cypriot partner, as the issue of unbiased media had antagonised the most vulnerable representatives of youth in their countries as well. The project participants are committed to holding the joint project on media literacy and critical thinking, because it answers their local community challenges and also promotes the international youth networking for the understanding of media and thus, in addition to that promotes the active citizenship and European values. The youth exchange promotes the principle of aware choice and aims to equip the young people with the necessary skills for being aware and responsible media consumers. The false news, the manipulation of information, the mystifications have been part of every age of humanity but it is thanks to the tools of online technologies that they manage to have a very dangerous effectiveness. Because of this situation, negative phenomena such as fake news, post truth, trolls have become part of our daily lives making it difficult to discern between false information and information, often making many of us involuntary disinformation agents. Being media literate allows us to see that this is untrue and media does, in fact, have underlying messages that affect us. By understanding those messages, we can change how it affects us. Media literacy is so important to consumers because it can help us to control our actions in response to media, and allow it to have less control over our views. The project objectives are: - Improving media literacy, critical thinking and research skills of the participant youth; - Promoting intercultural communication and combating bias; - Development of the international youth networks on media literacy; - Increasing the debating, discussion, interaction and self-expression skills of the participants; - Promotion of the active and responsible citizenship. - Support participants to recognize and deal with Fake news As media, traditional and modern (social media) is heavily influencing shaping of the public opinion, it is necessary to have the adequate knowledge of grasping the news and thus critically evaluating and rechecking what is given in a particular piece of news, as well as the source itself. The project participants are keen on exchanging their experiences and transferring their knowledge to their partners with the aim of the international networking on media literacy and critical thinking. Coming from the EU member states, the project partners share the common challenges of the recent antagonisation of the most vulnerable youth and unfortunately, the information that is biased towards minorities has been spread by various media sources. This project will seek to give the youth the opportunity of “thinking outside box” and by their interaction and intercultural experience, to handle any bias or stereotypes, and to become more independent, critical and creative thinkers. Some of the methods used are workshops, role-plays, simulation games, icebreakers, presentations, discussions, and debates, analysis of read materials, critical writing, outdoor and indoor interactive activities, and intercultural teambuilding games. Though the project we want to ensure young people have better access to reliable information, support their ability to evaluate information critically and engage in participatory and constructive dialogue. The youth exchange will be include thematic activities on media literacy from the different angles. Non-formal and informal learning will allow fostering the youth capacities to understand and critically evaluate the flow and sources of information. The project connected with European Year of Digital Citizenship Education 2025, an initiative aims to enhance digital literacy, promote responsible online behavior, and empower citizens to navigate the digital world effectively.
