Social exclusion remains a significant challenge for young people, with profound consequences for their well-being, participation in societal life, and future prospects. According to Eurostat, in 2023, 24.8% of children under 18 and 26.1% of young adults aged 18 to 24 in the EU were at risk of poverty or social exclusion (https://tinyurl.com/47fvrjhv, seen on 09-01-2025). This manifests in various forms, such as limited access to education, employment, and training opportunities, restricted participation in social and civic life, discrimination, and feelings of isolation and marginalization. Furthermore, according to EURES (EURopean Employment Services), in 2022 the employment rate for persons with disabilities in the EU was approximately 50%, compared to 75% for those without disabilities (https://tinyurl.com/a3bc8wze, seen on 10-01-2025).This indicates a persistent employment gap, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in accessing the labor market. In Cyprus, youth social exclusion is a pressing issue, exacerbated by high unemployment rates and limited access to resources for marginalized groups. As of 2024, Cyprus reported a youth unemployment rate of approximately 12%, according to Eurostat data (https://tinyurl.com/5n7kfwwu, seen on 10-01-2025). Additionally, around 16.7% of the Cypriot population was at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2023, as reported by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CYSTAT) (https://tinyurl.com/56s6md7x, seen on 10-01-2025). This project will empower Cypriot youth workers to address these challenges more effectively, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Additionally, a survey conducted by our organization and partner organizations in November-December 2024 revealed that individuals working in the field of youth often lack the knowledge and innovative methods needed to effectively engage young people with fewer opportunities. The survey, conducted across 9 organizations, gathered responses from 43 professionals working with youth. The results showed that 77% of respondents felt they needed additional training to support socially excluded young people, while 65% identified a lack of effective strategies and methods for engaging disadvantaged youth as a significant challenge. These findings highlight the pressing need for targeted professional development to equip youth workers with the tools and methodologies necessary to foster inclusion. Youth workers play a critical role in promoting social inclusion by providing support, guidance, and opportunities for young people to engage in their communities. However, many youth workers report a lack of the skills and knowledge needed to work effectively with marginalized youth. Empowering youth workers to work with marginalized and disadvantaged youth is essential as they build trust and provide a safe and supportive environment. Persons who work with youth, can encourage young people to express themselves, share their concerns, and access resources and opportunities. They also play a vital role in advocating for the needs of marginalized youth and fostering inclusive communities, paving the way for a fairer society where all young people have the chance to succeed. Goal To empower participants with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools they need to promote social inclusion and effectively support young people facing different barriers. Objectives 1. Increase understanding among youth workers, volunteers, NGO members, mentors, youth leaders, and other persons working directly with youth, about the challenges and needs of young people at risk of social exclusion. 2. Build practical skills to help participants better connect with and involve marginalized youth in meaningful activities and initiatives. 3. Equip participants and organizations with effective tools and methods to address the unique needs of disadvantaged young people and create inclusive opportunities. 4. Encourage a positive attitude toward creating and implementing projects that include socially excluded youth, fostering acceptance and solidarity. 5. Facilitate the sharing of best practices and experiences among participants from different backgrounds to strengthen their ability to work with youth with fewer opportunities. Through this project, we aim to foster acceptance, solidarity, and inclusivity within the youth work sector, ensuring no young person is left behind. The project also seeks to position youth work as a catalyst for positive social change, aligning with the EU's inclusion and diversity goals. By addressing these challenges, it contributes to building a stronger, more inclusive youth work community capable of driving meaningful change locally and across EU.
