Objectives

EUth: Understanding Media aims to help young people develop important media literacy skills so they can think critically about the media, recognize disinformation, and in general understand how media functions. Using non-formal education methods, the project will create an engaging and interactive learning environment where participants gain both knowledge and practical skills related to media as well as intercultural experience that projects are very much about. One of the main goals is to improve young people's ability to understand media. Participants will learn about the history of media, how different media systems function, and the role of media in democracy. They will also explore different types of media. The focus will be on mainstream, media as well as so-called alternative (those that spread disinformation), helping participants recognize biases and manipulation techniques. The project also focuses on practical skills. Participants will create different types of media content, such as articles, videos, and social media posts. They will work together to produce a project newspaper that will not only serve as a learning tool but also as a way to share their experiences with a wider audience. Additionally, they will learn fact-checking techniques and digital tools to verify news and fight disinformation. Another key objective is to empower young people to combat disinformation. The topic is very close to our organization and we are always trying to include our disinformation-focused seminars into our youthwork. The project will raise awareness about fake news and manipulation, helping participants understand the dangers of misinformation in society. Young people will be encouraged to take an active role in promoting responsible media consumption in their communities and to share strategies for identifying and responding to disinformation. Beyond media literacy, the project will also promote critical thinking and active citizenship. Participants will learn to question information, develop independent thinking skills, and better understand the connection between media and democracy. This will help them become more engaged citizens who make informed decisions and contribute to a more responsible society. EUth: Understanding Media seeks to address the gaps in formal education by offering an alternative approach to learning about media. Schools and universities often do not focus enough on media literacy, leaving young people without the necessary skills to navigate today’s media landscape. By using non-formal education methods, this project provides an accessible and engaging way to fill that gap, allowing young people to gain valuable skills that they can apply in their daily lives. Through this project, we hope to create a lasting impact by equipping young people with the knowledge and tools they need to better understand media, think critically, and actively fight disinformation.
