Objectives

The Ordinary Magic is a PDA designed to enhance the skills, resilience, and well-being of youth workers by integrating nature-based education and embodiment practices into youth work. The project responds to the increasing mental health challenges faced by young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as NEET youth, LGBTQ+ individuals, and young people from low-income communities. By equipping youth workers with innovative, experiential methodologies, the project will enable them to foster inclusion, empowerment, and emotional well-being among the young people they support. Context and Rationale Across Europe, young people are experiencing growing levels of anxiety, depression, and social isolation, exacerbated by socio-economic uncertainty and multiple crises. Research from the University of Salamanca (2022) found that 57% of European youth report frequent anxiety, with 39% experiencing symptoms of depression, while the National Institute of Mental Health (Czech Republic, 2023) reports that 40% of ninth-graders show signs of moderate to severe depression, with suicidal thoughts increasing by 30% over the past decade. Additionally, data from Statista (2021/2022) shows that approximately 10% of 11-year-olds in Europe report feeling lonely most of the time or always. Youth workers play a critical role in addressing these challenges, yet they often lack the tools and strategies needed to effectively support vulnerable youth. Many struggle to build trust, manage challenging behaviors, and sustain motivation in their work. There is a clear need for innovative and holistic approaches that empower both youth workers and young people to navigate these complex realities. Core Approach The Ordinary Magic is based on the premise that nature and the body are powerful instruments for promoting resilience, self-awareness, and social inclusion. Through nature-based activities, participants will explore ways to engage youth, create deep personal transformation, and foster a sense of belonging and connection. Embodiment practices will provide youth workers with tools to help young people regulate emotions, develop confidence, and enhance communication. The project aims to: - Enhance the capacity of youth workers to integrate nature-based and embodiment practices into their work, improving well-being, empowerment, and inclusion among disadvantaged youth. - Strengthen youth workers' understanding of vulnerable youth, equipping them with strategies to create safe, inclusive, and transformative learning environments. - Promote nature as a tool for resilience and empowerment, deepening youth workers’ knowledge of nature-based education. - Develop practical skills in using embodied methods, to foster self-expression and emotional regulation. - Support the long-term motivation and resilience of youth workers, ensuring they remain engaged and effective in their roles.
