Between Here and There is a project that uses storytelling and in particular the human library methodology to empower youth workers in promoting social inclusion and intercultural understanding. There are two main reasons WHY we want to realize this project. The first is that in our youth work we notice rising levels of social anxiety, often connected to diversity and discrimination, and therefore a growing need for youth workers to be equipped with methods and competences to address their youngsters and support their development and inclusion. The second reason regards the methodology we chose: in one of our last projects (Water to the Moon) we used storytelling in connection with conflict transformation, and we had an experience of Human Library. We noticed how powerful this experience was for our participants, and how many competences could be developed from it. We felt the desire to dedicate more in depth to develop it for and with our participating youth workers, and to train them in this method, so that they can use it with their youth. This methodology, with its focus on authentic expression, empathy, attentive listening, and celebration of diversity is highly relevant for our goals of social inclusion and intercultural understanding, and suitable to promote a higher quality of youth work. We believe that non-formal education should constantly keep a focus on the voices of participants, especially the most vulnerable ones, allowing different voices and stories to be expressed and heard, and creating for them a stronger access to society. Working on stories that connect to personal experiences and at the same time have social relevance, we will empower our participants to express their authentic voice, creating a safer and braver space where this is encouraged and concretely supported with tools. The NEEDS we want to address through our project were collected from our observations and from the dialogue we started with our partners. We organized what we collected in the following list of main needs: - Need for innovative and engaging methodologies At Younique we have at our heart to use and promote different methodologies that can bring innovation, quality and engagement for youth. We and our partners are aware that youth nowadays need to be involved through attractive and meaningful proposals, and we want to develop options in this direction. We bring storytelling and in particular the human library as precious contributions in this sense. - Need to address stereotypes and prejudices In a society too often polarized, many young people face challenges related to stereotypes and social divisions (migrants, minorities, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent …). Youth workers need tools to tackle these issues effectively. Storytelling and the human library have a great potential for starting authentic dialogue, shifting perspectives and opening up to different cultures and experiences. - Need to empower marginalized youth The human library allows their voices to be heard directly, fostering inclusion and representation. It brings a concrete understanding of complex dynamics such as discrimination, privilege and intersectionality. It can support our participants in providing a much more inclusive youth work. - Need to build skills for inclusion and diversity And to do it in international cooperations, exchanging best practices, opening up new perspectives and addressing together common challenges like radicalization, inequality, and lack of youth participation. The OBJECTIVES we intend to reach are: - bringing together 27 youth workers for 7 days, to train them in storytelling and the human library as innovative methodologies for youth work - to have the youth workers develop specific and transversal competences, that can be transferred to their local realities - to implement the new methods and competences through local actions in every participating country, reaching the target groups of our partners - to disseminate the project through strong dissemination activities, posts and media materials, in the social networks of Younique and of our partners.
