Our project is designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge scientific research on post-growth and the current practices in youth work, where these concepts are still underrepresented. While post-growth frameworks that focus on ecological sustainability, social equity, and sufficiency are gaining momentum in academia, they are largely absent from both formal and non-formal education systems. We aim to address this gap by bringing the latest research into youth work and empowering educators to tackle 21st-century challenges. This is one of the first EU initiatives to integrate post-growth into non-formal education while simultaneously developing key competencies for the 21st century, such as systems thinking, futures literacy, and emotional resilience—skills also highlighted in UNESCO educational documents as essential for navigating today's complex world. Our project has is motivated by the fact that youth workers often struggle to tackle the complexity and interconnectedness of contemporary global crises, such as climate change, inequality, and democratic erosion. Our needs analysis revealed that educators face significant challenges in facilitating complex discussions and making academic knowledge accessible to youth. The emotional weight of these topics, particularly climate anxiety, adds an extra layer of difficulty. Our project directly addresses these needs by equipping youth workers with the competencies necessary to deal with both the content and emotional dynamics of these global issues. Our project aims to contribute to the evolution of youth work by introducing transformative educational practices that tackle the identified challenges, empowering youth workers with essential competencies that are vital for addressing the global crises of our time. The objectives of the project include: Bridging the Knowledge Gap: We will integrate the latest post-growth research into youth work, helping youth workers address the root causes of today’s global challenges. Fostering Systems Thinking Competencies: We will introduce methodologies like the Systems Thinking Iceberg, giving youth workers tools to tackle complex global issues in their educational programs. Cultivating Futures Literacy: Participants will develop futures literacy, enabling them to guide young people in envisioning and planning for sustainable futures using tools like forecasting and backcasting. Enhancing Facilitation Skills: We will train youth workers to manage group dynamics and facilitate inclusive discussions on sensitive topics like climate change and social justice. Creating Safe Spaces for Emotional Expression: Youth workers will learn how to support young people experiencing climate anxiety through frameworks like Nonviolent Communication and Work That Reconnects. Our project aims to innovate and elevate the field of youth work across Europe by democratizing access to cutting-edge scientific research and turning it into actionable, practical educational tools for youth workers. By addressing post-growth, systems thinking, and futures literacy, we ensure that youth workers and young people are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the 21st century.
