Objectives

Environmental sustainability is one of the biggest challenges we face today. It requires fresh ideas and the active involvement of young people. The European Union (EU) has made serious efforts to fight climate change, with the European Green Deal aiming to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050. This plan focuses on big goals like creating a circular economy and reducing pollution (https://culture.ec.europa.eu/news/how-creative-europe-aims-to-go-green). These goals highlight how important it is to include sustainability in every area of life, especially in education, the arts, and youth participation. Young people play a vital role in creating a sustainable future. They are the ones who will live with the consequences of environmental problems, but they are also the ones who can bring real change. Recent studies show that young people care deeply about the environment. For example, a survey across Europe found that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, young people still considered climate change and environmental damage among their top concerns (https://eeb.org/library/pan-european-survey-climate-to-priority-for-youth). Another survey found that 39% of young Europeans see fighting climate change as one of the most important political issues (https://data.europa.eu/en/publications/datastories/understanding-youth-engagement-europe-through-open-data?utm_source). These numbers show a generation ready to take action for the planet. Art is a powerful way to turn this awareness into real action. Sustainable art focuses on reducing harm to the environment by using eco-friendly materials and raising awareness through creative work. Programs that combine art and sustainability have proven very effective. For instance, eco-art education helps young people think critically, care for the environment, and find creative solutions to ecological problems (https://eastendarts.org/art-and-environmental-sustainability/). Community art projects have also shown how art can inspire people and communities to adopt environmentally friendly habits. Germany has already done some inspiring work in this area. For example, a program involving 11 secondary schools in Berlin used art to teach students about the environmental and labor problems tied to fast fashion. Through this program, students learned art techniques while raising awareness of the impact of the fashion industry, creating impressive art installations to tell the story. This is a great example of how art and education can work together to create meaningful change. Even with these efforts, there’s still a need to help young people across Europe get more involved in sustainable art. While initiatives like the one in Berlin are inspiring, many youth projects lack the resources or knowledge to fully integrate sustainability into their work. The European Youth Foundation has encouraged organizations to include eco-friendly practices in their projects, but more support is needed to train young people in sustainable art (https://www.coe.int/en/web/european-youth-foundation/sustainability). Also, although young climate activists are growing in number and awareness, they often don’t have enough platforms or tools to share their eco-friendly art projects (https://pjp-eu.coe.int/en/web/coyote-magazine/youth-eco-activism-in-europe-participating-in-creating-another-world). This project aims to fill these gaps by empowering young people to take part in sustainable art practices. The main goal is to improve their knowledge and skills in eco-friendly production and art, helping them become more creative and environmentally responsible. By bringing together participants from different countries, the project will create a diverse and collaborative space for sharing ideas and promoting environmental awareness. The specific objectives of the project are as follows: -Organize workshops on designing creative products using waste materials, ensuring that at least 70% of participants acquire skills in using sustainable materials. -Conduct informative sessions and hands-on activities related to sustainable art, increasing the rate of environmentally conscious creative projects among young participants. -Enable participants to create eco-friendly art and design products by the project’s conclusion, increasing the visibility of these products on social media and at exhibition events by 60%.
