The project “Beyond Boundaries: Youth Perspective on Freedom of Expression” was designed to strengthen young people’s understanding of freedom of expression as a fundamental human right and a core European value, while encouraging responsible, critical and active participation in democratic life. At the time of application, we identified a growing need among young people to better understand the complexity of freedom of expression in contemporary societies, particularly in relation to hate speech, misinformation, political polarization and media influence. Many young people actively use social media and digital platforms but lack structured opportunities to critically reflect on their rights, responsibilities and the ethical dimensions of communication. Therefore, the primary aim of the project was to provide a safe, intercultural and participatory learning environment where these issues could be explored in depth. The main objectives of the project were: - To increase participants’ knowledge of freedom of expression, its legal frameworks and its limitations, particularly regarding hate speech and discrimination. - To strengthen media literacy skills, enabling participants to critically analyze information sources and recognize misinformation and manipulation. - To promote shared EU values such as democracy, equality, human dignity, human rights and the rule of law. - To foster intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding among young people from France, Germany, Türkiye and Serbia. - To encourage active citizenship by supporting participants in developing their own awareness campaigns related to freedom of expression. - To enhance personal competences such as communication skills, teamwork, empathy, conflict resolution and critical thinking. - To contribute to the EU Youth Goals, particularly those related to inclusive societies, youth participation in democratic life and information & constructive dialogue. Through non-formal education methods, participatory workshops and experiential learning activities, the project sought not only to transmit knowledge but also to empower participants to become active multipliers in their local communities. Ultimately, we aimed to create a long-term impact by equipping young people with tools, confidence and motivation to promote respectful dialogue and democratic values beyond the duration of the exchange.
