In today's world, climate crisis, environmental degradation and unsustainable living practices have become one of the most important issues threatening the future of young people. In 2023, according to a report published by the United Nations, carbon emissions worldwide have reached the highest level in 50 years, and the lack of individual awareness is a major obstacle to solving this situation. Germany is also affected and the country's carbon emissions have increased in recent years. In this context, it is of utmost importance for individuals and especially young people to gain environmental awareness and reduce their carbon footprint. Our project aimed to increase young people's environmental awareness while supporting their mental and physical health. At the same time, carbon footprint awareness with yoga allows individuals to make sustainable changes in their lifestyles by gaining mental calmness and awareness; in this context, the project aimed to offer a mental and physical transformation process that reduced their carbon footprint by enabling young people to discover both their environmental and personal responsibilities. Research shows that yoga and meditation increase individuals' stress management and mindfulness levels (Harvard Health, 2022). In this context, individual practices such as yoga are ideal tools to both support mental well-being and increase environmental awareness. Our project created a mental infrastructure that will enable young people to integrate with nature and find solutions to environmental problems. It is also known that individuals have incomplete knowledge about carbon footprint awareness. According to a survey conducted by the European Commission in 2022, 64% of young people do not fully understand the concept of carbon footprinting. This makes it difficult for young people to develop environmentally friendly habits. Within the scope of this project, both theoretical knowledge and practical solutions were offered to young people through carbon footprint calculation workshops and sustainable living practices. Another problem that forms the basis of the project is the lack of initiative of young people in addressing environmental issues. The EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027 has identified the empowerment of young people in the areas of active citizenship, environmental awareness and sustainability as a priority goal. Our project directly served these objectives and enabled young people to develop environmental leadership skills. Our overall aim was to promote environmental sustainability by increasing both individual awareness and social sensitivity in young people. Our specific objectives in this regard were: 1-Teaching young people the concept of carbon footprint and raise awareness about carbon footprint. 2-Increasing mental resilience and awareness of young people through yoga and meditation sessions. 3-Ensuring that young people develop environmentally friendly habits by popularizing sustainable living practices 4-Raising social awareness through activities that will raise awareness on environmental sustainability. This project not only raised individual awareness, but also encouraged young people to take the lead in their communities in protecting the environment. By passing on their knowledge and skills to their families, friends and wider community, young people further spread the impact of the project. Thus, our project was an important step towards a sustainable future at both individual and societal level.
