Objectives

The Youth4Biodiversity project is designed to empower young people to become active agents of biodiversity conservation by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to engage in environmental action at the local, national, and European levels. Biodiversity loss is one of the most pressing global challenges, threatening ecosystems, food security, and climate stability. While young people are increasingly aware of environmental issues, they often lack the tools, support, and structured opportunities to take meaningful action. The Youth4Biodiversity project responds to this gap by equipping young people with environmental literacy, leadership skills, and hands-on experience in biodiversity conservation. Through experiential learning, community-driven action, and stakeholder engagement, the project fosters a new generation of youth leaders, advocates, and changemakers committed to long-term biodiversity solutions. The Youth4Biodiversity approach was first tested by the youth-led learning community, within the PLANET4B Horizon Project, which explored innovative ways to engage urban youth in biodiversity prioritization. Hence, in this project, through a structured three-phase learning journey, participants will transition from understanding systemic environmental challenges to taking action through community-driven initiatives, ultimately culminating in entrepreneurial change by developing sustainable biodiversity-focused projects. This project aligns with youth work principles by ensuring that learning is experiential, participatory, and youth-led. The objectives of Youth4Biodiversity are to: 1. Develop environmental literacy & ecological empathy: Participants will gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and climate resilience, exploring systemic causes and enablers of change. Through immersive learning in biodiverse settings, they will strengthen their personal connection to nature, fostering ecological empathy and responsibility. 2. Build critical thinking & systems awareness: By examining biodiversity issues through a systemic lens, participants will move beyond simplistic environmental narratives, developing systems-thinking competences that enable them to analyze policy frameworks, economic influences, and the role of collective action in sustainability efforts. 3. Equip youth with hands-on experience & practical skills: Through experiential learning, participants will apply nature-based solutions (NBS) to real-world biodiversity challenges, enhancing their ability to design, implement, and manage sustainability initiatives. By engaging in outdoor activities, community projects, and participatory exercises, they will translate knowledge into action. 4. Promote youth-led action & local impact: Participants will be supported in developing and piloting local biodiversity initiatives, applying NBS to address ecological challenges in their communities. By leading environmental education workshops, conducting advocacy campaigns, and engaging with local stakeholders, they will become catalysts for change in their regions. 5. Strengthen leadership, advocacy, and entrepreneurial skills: Through structured learning experiences, participants will gain leadership, project management, and civic engagement competences. They will develop their ability to advocate for biodiversity policies, communicate sustainability issues effectively, and collaborate with local and regional stakeholders. 6. Facilitate cross-cultural learning & cooperation: The project brings together youth from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, fostering intercultural dialogue and cross-border collaboration on biodiversity conservation. By working in international teams, participants will strengthen their ability to co-create solutions, exchange best practices, and contribute to a broader European sustainability movement. 7. Support the transition from activism to sustainable entrepreneurship: The project ensures that young people move beyond short-term environmental actions by providing them with the tools to develop financially viable and long-term biodiversity initiatives. They will explore green entrepreneurship, funding opportunities (such as the New European Bauhaus), and policy engagement strategies, ensuring that their projects are scalable and impactful beyond the youth exchange.
