The goal of the project was to create a safe and empowering environment during a German-Spanish youth exchange in July 2025 in Halle (Saale) and the surrounding area, where 24 young people from Spain and Germany from socially disadvantaged backgrounds could learn from and with one another, laugh together, and actively shape their future together. Through international exchange and transnational experience, the project aimed to overcome barriers, foster reflection on one’s own identity, and strengthen respectful coexistence in a diverse society. The central objective was to promote the integration of young people disproportionately affected by mechanisms of social exclusion (the participants all find themselves at the intersection of being migrant, queer, school dropouts, addiction history, domestic violence, physical and/or intellectual dis-abilities, etc.) and to address discrimination and bullying in everyday school life in a thematic, safe, and transformative manner, while jointly developing solution-oriented approaches. The participants were to be given opportunities to develop their personal perspectives and potential, gain self-confidence, and discover new avenues for their social participation. The aim was to foster respect, solidarity, and an appreciation for diversity through cross-border encounters. In the workshops—culinarity, self-defense, art, and upcycling—we collaborated to plan creative presentations that were showcased at a public event attended by families, teachers, local politicians, media representatives, and other young people. The involvement of educational professionals, as well as cooperation with local NGOs and other stakeholders, was intended to support the project’s long-term impact. City excursions and trips to rural areas offered varied learning experiences, fostered intercultural dialogue, and strengthened cooperative and communication skills. Another objective was the long-term strengthening of social cohesion characterized by respect, equal opportunity, and courage in the face of discrimination, while also taking the young people’s social environment into account more fully than is often the case. Participants were encouraged and equipped with practical tools to integrate their experiences and newly gained self-confidence into their daily lives and to actively stand up against racist, queerphobic, and xenophobic tendencies. The project brought together young people in an international environment, many of whom were leaving their town for the very first time; they came from a wide variety of intersectional backgrounds through which they had experienced multiple forms of discrimination. In contrast, the project fostered self-esteem, international friendship, opportunities, and courage through creative, interactive, and participatory experiences that built self-efficacy. Overall, the project contributed to the promotion of pluralistic, inclusive, and democratic youth cultures and also provided impetus for long-term, effective change in the participating communities.
