The European Union is founded on the principles of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, including the rights of minorities. Nevertheless, in recent years, democratic institutions have faced escalating threats, further intensified by the Covid-19 pandemic and Russian aggression in Ukraine. The Spring 2019 Global Attitudes Survey highlights ongoing issues within some EU countries regarding democratic governance, revealing significant dissatisfaction among citizens with their nations' democratic progress. To address these challenges, the European Commission has made revitalising European democracy a top priority, as outlined in Horizon Europe (2020). This initiative focuses on reconnecting European citizens with democratic institutions, protecting democracy from external interference, disinformation, and online hate speech, and promoting democratic values both within the EU and globally. In response, we have launched the project "Citizens of Tomorrow: Your Voice Your Vote," aimed at empowering young people to actively engage in democratic processes and civic life. This project seeks to enhance their understanding of democracy, voting, and civic engagement. By uniting participants from Türkiye, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Romania, Greece, the project aspires to foster a shared appreciation of democratic values and practices across diverse European societies. Key Objectives of the Project: - To enhance participants' understanding of democratic principles, the importance of voting, and the role of civic engagement in democratic societies. - To motivate participants to actively engage in civic activities, such as voting, community service, and public discussions. - To organise hands-on activities, including mock elections and community projects, to provide practical experience in democratic participation. - To provide opportunities for participants to learn from each other and understand different perspectives on democracy and civic engagement. - To ensure inclusive participation by engaging young people from diverse backgrounds, including those with fewer opportunities. - To develop skills such as writing, designing, photography, and videography, to effectively communicate civic messages. - To provide training in public speaking, negotiation, and advocacy to empower participants as civic leaders. - To encourage a sense of European citizenship and solidarity among participants. - To raise participants' understanding of the Erasmus+ Programme, Youthpass, and the value of non-formal and informal education. - To motivate participants to utilise Erasmus+ opportunities, develop their own project ideas, and engage in local and international actions. "Citizens of Tomorrow: Your Voice Your Vote" aims to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to become active, informed, and empowered citizens, capable of contributing positively to their communities and democratic societies.
