Objectives

SustainConnect: Empowering Youth Across Borders" was implemented by Laial e.V. (Berlin, Germany) together with Eco Axarquia (Maro/Nerja, Spain) to empower young people with fewer opportunities – in particular refugees, migrants and rural youth – through sustainability education, intercultural exchange and practical skill-building. The five objectives set at application stage were pursued throughout: (1) Youth Empowerment & Social Inclusion, giving young refugees, migrants and rural youth from economically disadvantaged areas a meaningful role in an international project; (2) Sustainability Education & Climate Action, raising awareness of climate change, environmental responsibility and sustainable agriculture through hands-on learning; (3) Skill Development & Employability, building practical competences in bio-agriculture, food processing, permaculture and small-scale construction; (4) Intercultural Exchange & Dialogue, connecting urban migrant youth from Berlin with a multinational rural community in Andalusia; and (5) Active Citizenship & Community Engagement, encouraging participants to take ownership of local and global challenges. Both partner organisations share values of environmental awareness, inclusion, equal opportunity and non-formal, participatory youth work, but brought complementary expertise to the project: Laial's experience empowering young refugees through creative and craft-based projects, and Eco Axarquia's grounding in organic farming, permaculture and rural community-building. The project was conceived as the first youth-facing step of Laial's and Eco Axarquia’s longer-term purpose to focus on climate-related hardship faced by many families (both in Europe, in the Middle East and Africa) and provide young people with sustainable-agriculture knowledge that can be exchanged and adapted across contexts.
