Objectives

Various studies and diverse experience show how valuable nature and outdoor educational activities are for the development and well-being of young people. Nature and outdoor education is particularly suitable for working with young people with various physical and/or mental disabilities, as many methods are aimed at perceiving nature with certain selected senses, experiencing nature rather than primarily understanding facts. However, many wonderful methods of nature and outdoor education that strengthen the relationship with nature as well as promote social skills and personal well-being are still largely unknown. Many youth hostels host young people as part of youth-seminars and school trips. Many youth hostels are located in the countryside and are therefore ideal for organising nature education activities. However, the youth hostels of the partner organisations involved in this project from Slovenia, Portugal and Spain in particular, and in many cases also from Germany, generally lack corresponding offers and experience. The training requested here would like to contribute to changing this by training 22 educators/youth workers who are employees of youth hostels or work with them on a freelance basis to develop and lead outdoor and nature education programmes. The aim is to deal with the objectives, content and concepts of nature and outdoor education, to familiarise themselves with innovative methods, try them out, practise them and adapt them to their own needs, framework conditions and possibilities in order to then integrate them into their own educational youth work activities. At the suggestion and request of the Spanish partner organisation, particular attention is paid to working with young people with disabilities. Not only do outdoor projects rarely take place in youth work/youth education work, they often lack a sound educational concept with clearly defined objectives. The training requested here aims to contribute to changing this within the participating hostel organisations and specifically in at least 12 youth hostels. In particular, the largely unknown and unnoticed social aspects and goals that can be combined with well organised outdoor activities should become visible. The participants from Slovenia, Spain, Germany and Portugal represent or work together with youth hostels that have set themselves the goal of developing and offering outdoor and nature education programmes for young people and that actually have the resources and want to make them available. As part of the follow-up activities, the youth hostels involved in this training will develop outdoor nature education programmes that will be tested and evaluated from summer of 2026 on.
