Children's and youth parliaments are an important part of a vibrant and future-oriented democracy. It offers young people the opportunity to actively contribute their opinions, wishes and ideas and to participate in political decision-making processes. Precisely because children and young people are often not eligible to vote, such a body creates a platform where their voices can still be heard. Participation in a children's and youth parliament promotes an understanding of democratic processes. Young people learn how to conduct discussions, find compromises and make decisions. As a result, they develop not only political skills, but also important social skills such as teamwork, a sense of responsibility and respect for other opinions. Another important aspect is strengthening the self-confidence of young people. When they experience that their ideas are taken seriously and implemented, their confidence in their own effectiveness and in democratic institutions grows. In the long term, this can lead to greater political commitment. In summary, the goal can be formulated to initiate a participation format that not only represents district interests, but also thinks beyond municipal boundaries. This objective can only be achieved if the various participation formats, or children's and youth parliaments, from the Berlin districts join forces and develop a joint sustainable strategy.
