Objectives

At the Model European Parliament Germany, young people take on the roles of Members of the European Parliament in order to experience democratic decision-making and political opinion-forming processes in a way that connects play with reality and relates to their own lives. Through this project, we advocate for an open, supportive, democratic, and youth-oriented Europe. The complex political situation has forced us to rethink our social and democratic foundations and to draw lessons from recent developments. For several years now, European integration has been facing a deep crisis of confidence. Euroscepticism and nationalism are increasing in almost all EU member states. All of this creates uncertainty among young people and blurs their perception of the EU. Above all, the project aimed to promote greater participation rights for young people. Goal: More Democracy Democracy is the political and legal foundation of the EU and its member states. Preserving and strengthening it is a permanent responsibility for everyone. However, in many member states, including among young people, doubts are growing as to whether democracy is still the best form of government for solving today’s problems. In particular, populists and nationalists try to unsettle young people with simplistic answers. Yet democracies and democratic engagement are precisely what enable young people to live responsibly in a free society. Goal: More Europe Eurobarometer surveys and studies show that knowledge about the EU is insufficient, resulting in a loss of trust in European integration. At the same time, Europe increasingly shapes the lives of young people. Through the MEP project, we wanted to create a safe space for critical discussion of current structures, challenges, and processes across Europe and within the EU. We also wanted to give young people the opportunity to analyze existing political conditions and their own interests, while showing them ways to actively shape these processes themselves. In this way, Europe could be experienced as a dynamic process open to participation and change. Participation in the EU Youth Dialogue We used the instruments of the Youth Dialogue and took part in consultations in the field of “EU Youth Policy” as well as in other activities related to implementing the EU Youth Goals. The dialogue between young people and policymakers was beneficial for both sides and will have a lasting impact. Cooperation with youth policy structures and stakeholders was initiated, with a strong focus on the everyday realities of young people. In doing so, we also aligned ourselves with the priorities of the Trio Presidency 2025–2026: “Connecting Europe with Youth.” Digitalization We actively implemented and further developed the potential of digitalization within the project.
