The project “Youth Voice: Shape the Future” was created in the context of decreasing youth participation in municipal elections in Ida-Viru County and the generally low level of civic engagement among young people. Although young people in Estonia can already vote from the age of 16, many of them are not aware of their rights, do not understand how local decisions are made, and feel disconnected from political processes. The aim of the project was to provide young people with simple, accessible and youth-friendly activities that would help them understand how local elections work, why their vote matters, and how they can influence the future of their municipality. The main objectives were: To increase civic awareness among young people by explaining elections, voting rights and local decision-making in a clear, understandable and non-formal way. To motivate young people to participate in the municipal elections by showing that their voice matters and that voting from the age of 16 is an opportunity to shape their community. To develop young people’s critical thinking and active citizenship skills through discussions, photo quests, interactive workshops, and a youth hackathon. To involve young people from different municipalities especially from Jõhvi, Toila and Sillamäe, ensuring equal access and inclusion. To strengthen cooperation between youth centres and schools and support local youth workers in encouraging youth participation. To give young people practical experience of influencing their environment by generating real ideas during the hackathon and photo-quest activities. All activities were designed to be interactive, youth-friendly and directly linked to the municipal elections, so young people could connect the project experience with real decision-making processes in their community.
