Objectives

The project aimed to enhance engagement in blended learning by integrating co-design approaches and encouraging learning experiences to be developed with learners, not only for them. More specifically, the project aimed to: - explore and better understand the factors influencing engagement in blended learning environments; - research, test, and document co-design approaches in adult learning and professional learning contexts; - develop practical tools and reflection methods that support more intentional and learner-centred blended learning design; - facilitate international collaboration, exchange of practices, and shared learning between partners and participants in Estonia and Finland; - strengthen digital education, inclusion, participation, and professional development in adult learning. The project also aimed to create opportunities for collaborative reflection, experimentation, and dialogue around blended learning design and learner engagement.

Background

Blended learning has become a common approach in adult education and workplace learning. While digital and face-to-face learning formats are increasingly combined, many learning experiences still focus primarily on delivery formats rather than on meaningful learner engagement and participation. Learning is often designed for learners instead of together with them, while questions related to motivation, interaction, ownership, and learner experience receive less attention. The project addressed the need for more engaging, learner-centred, and meaningful blended learning approaches. We wanted to explore how co-design and participatory approaches could support better learning experiences and help learning professionals make more intentional learning design decisions. The project also responded to the need for practical reflection methods that support collaboration, learner involvement, and deeper understanding of how blended learning environments influence engagement, participation, and learning.
