Objectives

The rural economy has enormous potential to generate decent and productive jobs, as well as contributing significantly to sustainable development and economic growth. Although this area represents a significant share of employment and production in many developing countries, it remains marked by high levels of poverty and a notable lack of decent work. In fact, almost 80% of the world's extremely poor live in rural areas. Promoting decent jobs in these areas is crucial to eradicating poverty and ensuring food security for a growing world population. This approach is clearly set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which highlights the importance of promoting rural development, especially in the agriculture and food security sectors. Attention should also be paid to creating new job opportunities in rural areas related to digitalisation, renewable energy, sustainable tourism, promotion of local products and other emerging occupations that can contribute to cost reduction and economic growth. The possibility of moving to rural areas in search of employment or to start a business represents a promising alternative. According to data from the Observatory of the Rural World, these areas have lower unemployment rates, higher Social Security affiliation and a higher proportion of business creation compared to urban environments. These economic advantages are added to other equally relevant ones, such as a better quality of life and more accessible housing prices, with average rents considerably lower than in cities. The development potential of the rural economy is still significant, since it is estimated that only 40% of its capacities are currently being used, leaving a wide margin for growth until reaching 70-80% of its possibilities. This economic context offers a considerable source of employment and opportunities that young people should not ignore. For this reason, the consortium of this project has designed a youth exchange with the purpose of promoting youth employability and entrepreneurship in rural areas. Our aim is to help young people discover the opportunities that these areas offer, often hidden behind the dynamics of globalisation, urbanisation and economic competition. The project is based on the needs detected among more than 200 young people interviewed, among the partner entities collected through online surveys: - High rate of youth unemployment in rural areas - Offer training aimed at practical and useful skills for application in the world of work. - Lack of information and training of young people on new job opportunities in rural areas, such as renewable energy, digitalisation, agriculture and livestock, tourism, social services, digital marketing and circular economy. - Lack of self-employment and business knowledge in rural areas. Based on these needs, the following general objectives of the project have been defined: - Improve employability and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of young people. - Position the rural area as an opportunity for sustainable economic development, capable of mitigating depopulation. We hope to work through these specific objectives: - Explore and publicize new job opportunities in rural areas linked to emerging sectors such as green energy, digitalization, agriculture, tourism and the circular economy. - Provide the youth sector with specific training to develop skills in self-employment and youth entrepreneurship. - Promote the creation of collaboration networks between young people and rural entrepreneurs. - Increase awareness about the benefits of living and working in rural environments.
