Objectives

Looking at the world through the eyes of youth, many young people report on identity issues, finding it difficult to develop personal and social identities and position themselves in the broad society they participate in. With that, reports show a dramatic rise in stress, anxiety, and depression and general mental health deprivation. Even though there are many possible causes for this rise in mental health problems, many psychological studies witness that strengthening identity with respect to one’s roots and culture has a positive impact on the overall well-being. Knowing yourself brings consistency, emotional stability and inner peace in a rather changing and unstable world. With the project “Find Yourself," we want to offer implementation of Lev Vygotsky’s most famous developmental socio-cultural theory into the non-formal learning practice: according to this theory, a person is inseparable from their surroundings and cultural context. In order to build one’s identity and to understand oneself, it’s necessary to be aware of the impact that social and cultural surroundings had on one’s growth - such as traditions, language and social norms. Much of personal values and beliefs may be inherited from the social and variate from one context to another. If not aware of this impact, a person may feel unknown to themselves, leading to a series of mental health struggles. With “Find Yourself," we want to bring awareness to participants of their cultures and social realities they grew up in, helping them integrate their roots and encourage them to be agents of positive change for factors they don’t identify with. To challenge their everyday micro-cultures, we aim to create a unique social setting for the project, set in the nature site of Tenerife. To empower participants in such a way as to foster identity, explore their roots and culture, and overcome the mental health struggles of the modern era, we will rely on psychological tools, outdoor education and creative expression. Objectives: - Bring awareness to the impact of the cultural and social context on one’s identity. - Empower the youth to critically evaluate negative factors in their everyday surroundings. - Encourage identity clarity in young people by fostering healthy relationships with their roots, culture, social surroundings and nature. - Equip youth with psychological tools and tools from outdoor learning on how to overcome mental health struggles and achieve emotional stability. - Encourage sustainable habits related to the environment and the social context of the youth. - Create a unique space open for dialogue, sharing, critical evaluation and networking. - Introduce young people to the “socio-cultural theory” of development as a tool for practical assessment and adjustment of their everyday realities. - Introduce the power of non-formal education to the youth.
