The #ROOTS (Resilient Roots: Empowering Rural Youth for a Greener Tomorrow) project was born from a real and urgent need: the growing disconnect between young people and rural communities, where opportunities are shrinking, depopulation is rising, and sustainability often feels like a distant priority. Many young people from rural or semi-rural areas feel that their only choice is to leave—migrating to bigger cities in search of education, jobs, and a future they don’t believe exists at home. This loss of youth weakens local economies, drains communities of innovation, and creates a cycle where rural areas become increasingly marginalized and forgotten. The challenge is not just about jobs or infrastructure; it’s about reviving a sense of possibility and ownership in these communities, showing young people that they can build something meaningful where they are, instead of feeling forced to leave everything behind. At the same time, climate change and environmental degradation are hitting rural areas hard, but young people often lack the knowledge, tools, or confidence to take action. Sustainability can feel like an issue that belongs to policy-makers or corporations, rather than something that can be led from the ground up. How do we turn rural spaces into hubs of innovation? How do we empower young people to become part of the solution rather than feeling like victims of circumstances? How do we make sustainability not just an ideal, but a career path and a way of life? These are the questions that drive this project. Through hands-on, practical learning experiences, intercultural exchange, and peer collaboration, we want to show young people that they don’t have to choose between staying and succeeding—that there is a future in rural communities, and they have the power to shape it. We will give them the tools to create sustainable businesses, the skills to advocate for green policies, and the confidence to launch local initiatives that make a real impact. The project will also tackle the social barriers many young people from rural areas face, such as limited networks, fewer international opportunities, and a lack of exposure to entrepreneurship and innovation. By connecting them with like-minded peers, mentors, and real-world examples of sustainable rural businesses, we create a support system that goes beyond the exchange itself, leaving them with practical knowledge, lasting friendships, and a renewed belief in what’s possible.
