Rural & Plural is a youth exchange that seeks to transform both the perception and reality of rural life through art, storytelling, and active youth participation. It emerges from a shared need among our European partners: the lack of safe and inclusive spaces for young people in rural areas, the underrepresentation of diversity in these communities, and the absence of opportunities for youth engagement. With this project, we aim to help new generations envision a future in their territories, breaking away from the idea that migration to the city is the only path forward. Through non-formal education methodologies, our goal is to empower 31 young people from six European countries to become agents of change in their rural communities, equipping them with tools to reflect on their identity, share their experiences, and design transformative actions. Rural & Plural focuses on three key objectives from the perspective of youth work: 1. Making diversity in rural areas visible and redefining rural identity. Through artistic and narrative methodologies such as Photovoice and Land Art, participants will explore their relationship with rural life and challenge stereotypes that portray it as a homogeneous or exclusionary space. We aim to ensure that rural youth see themselves reflected in a more realistic and plural narrative where their stories and experiences take center stage. 2. Creating cooperation networks among rural youth across Europe. Throughout the exchange, participants will build a supportive community where they can share experiences, identify common challenges, and develop collective initiatives. We will foster the creation of a transnational network that strengthens connections between young people from different rural regions and serves as a platform for future collaborations. 3. Promoting active civic engagement and youth participation in rural communities. Rural & Plural will provide participants with tools and strategies for community action. By the end of the project, at least 75% of the group will have initiated or participated in a local action within their communities, promoting inclusion, youth empowerment, and sustainable rural development. We want participants not only to reflect on their reality but also to feel empowered to transform it. From a youth work perspective, this project addresses the urgent need to create opportunities for young people in rural areas, where a lack of resources, isolation, and limited training options hinder their personal and social development. Through experiential and participatory learning, Rural & Plural will provide a safe space where young people can express themselves freely, build self-confidence, and develop key skills such as critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. Additionally, the exchange will take place in a rural house in Aragón, fostering engagement with the local community through various activities and direct interaction with local stakeholders. This immersion will allow participants to better understand rural realities and establish connections that could lead to further participation in local and European initiatives. With Rural & Plural, we aim to demonstrate that rural life is not synonymous with stagnation or limitations, but rather a space full of opportunities for young people. We advocate for a youth work approach that empowers, connects, and inspires young people to redefine the future of their rural communities from a plural, inclusive, and sustainable perspective.
