Objectives

In the context of the ATENEA project, our objectives are linked to the immersion in the simulation which, unfortunately, past generations have experienced on their own skin, where autocracies and totalitarian regimes were born out of the absence of supranational regulatory bodies capable of ensuring the social, economic and political stability of a given group of countries. The creation of the EU as a standard of coexistence and unification shows us that only through understanding, active participation of its citizens and reaching out to the masses is the key to long-term stability. Socio-economic progress, supported by a progressive political climate, is the only way to achieve a European Union that is close to all social spheres. Barró sets out a series of points that it will work on during the development of the ATENEA project to facilitate access to this knowledge for the young participants: We want to expose young people to the complexity of political systems through simulations that reflect both the advantages of democracy and the constraints imposed by autocratic regimes. This immersion is designed to give participants a visceral and direct experience of the differences between these systems, understanding the importance of fundamental freedoms and rights, and the real impact of their violation. We aim to map and develop participants' individual competencies, identifying their strengths and areas for growth in the context of a simulated political environment. This process will enable them to contribute effectively to the success of the project and foster a cohesive community committed to democratic values. We emphasise the creation and strengthening of communities based on the democratic principles learned. Young people will be encouraged to take active roles within these communities, sharing responsibilities and working as a team to address the challenges presented during the simulations, learning the importance of collaboration and civic engagement. Through the experience, participants will learn to communicate their ideas, cooperate with others and coordinate efforts in diverse political contexts. This development is essential to their ability to participate effectively in democratic processes and conflict resolution. We aim to provide an in-depth understanding of how democracy works, the importance of citizen participation and the role of institutions in protecting human rights. Through critical reflection and analysis of simulated political systems, young people will gain a clearer appreciation of democratic values and the need to defend them. We focus on helping young people cope with the pressure and stress that can arise in situations of political conflict, teaching them to adapt their strategies and maintain a critical perspective. This process will enable them to better handle challenges in their personal lives and in their future civic engagements. By contrasting their experiences in different political systems, young people will reflect on their own values and ethical principles. This process of introspection will help them clarify their beliefs and strengthen their commitment to democracy and human rights. By the end of the project, young people are expected to become active ambassadors for democracy in their communities. We will encourage them to apply the lessons learned to promote greater civic participation and to advocate for democratic values in their local environments. We will motivate participants to develop and implement projects that reflect the democratic principles learned, contributing to the construction of a more just and participatory society. At the organisational level, we will seek to understand how the approaches and methods of the ATENEA project can be effectively applied in local and international contexts, thus strengthening our youth work strategies and expanding our network of collaboration around democratic values. Our aim is that, by the end of the project, young people will not only have a deeper understanding of democracy and its challenges, but will also be equipped with the skills and motivation to be active agents of change in their communities, advocating and promoting a more inclusive and participatory Europe.
