The "NextGen IMPACT" project is part of the Erasmus+ program and has the main objective of promoting sustainable development among young participants while emphasizing the importance of democracy as a fundamental pillar for achieving such development. The international exchange will bring together 31 young people from Portugal, Turkey, Spain, and Estonia, preferably aged between 18 and 25, coming from regions with differentiated socio-economic and cultural contexts but facing similar challenges. Through this project, we aim to address contemporary issues affecting these regions, such as the lack of attention from central authorities in peripheral areas, population aging in Portugal, youth unemployment in various parts of Europe, post-conflict social instability in Europe, as well as the effects of tourism pressure and population fluctuation in Spain. These contexts, which directly impact the social and personal development of young people, provide an excellent opportunity to foster reflection on sustainability and encourage active youth participation in society. The project is centered on non-formal education, ensuring an innovative methodological approach that engages young people in practical and collaborative activities. Through dynamics such as group work, visits to significant places, and participatory exercises like "Lotus Blossom" and "World Café", young people will be able to reflect on the social and environmental issues affecting their regions and find joint solutions. The project we are proposing aligns with the values and objectives of the Erasmus Plus 2025 program, aiming not only to disseminate knowledge but also to develop key competencies and skills for participants, while providing them with a transformative experience. In this sense, the focus on sustainable development and democracy fully integrates the need to work towards active, responsible citizenship committed to European values. Firstly, it is essential to highlight that our approach not only promotes awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations but also seeks to ensure that participants not only understand these issues but also live them in their daily lives and promote them within their communities. This approach builds collective awareness that is not limited to academic or theoretical learning, but is materialized in concrete actions by young people. This informal learning, promoted through non-formal methodology and intercultural exchange, allows them to reflect, experiment, and develop their creativity, with the goal of fostering real behavioral change within their communities. Regarding the subtheme of democracy, we are aware that one of the most significant challenges facing European societies today is the fragility of democratic systems, which are being threatened by misinformation, extremism, and citizen apathy. Therefore, our project seeks to raise awareness among young people about how they can contribute to strengthening democracy, be agents of change, and fight against the erosion of fundamental rights, encouraging active participation in political and social decision-making. This focus aligns with the key principles of Erasmus Plus 2025, which aim to promote active youth participation in public life, foster an inclusive European citizenship, and raise awareness among young people about fundamental European values. Moreover, all our activities will be designed to maximize inclusion, respect for diversity, and equal opportunities, ensuring that young people from different backgrounds can equally benefit from the experience. The youth will engage in evaluation, reflection, and feedback processes that will allow them to measure their progress and set personal development goals, aligned with Youthpass objectives and the acquisition of transversal competencies. Lastly, our goal is for the youth to, upon returning to their communities, be able to multiply the project’s impact through the dissemination of results and the creation of new local initiatives, such as awareness-raising events, volunteering activities, and proposals for new international exchanges. Through these activities, we ensure that the impact of the exchange is not limited to the direct participants but is expanded and continued over time, creating a cycle of learning and action that extends beyond the project's timeline. With this comprehensive and high-quality approach, we aim not only for participants to increase their environmental and political awareness but also to become active agents who contribute to the creation of a more democratic, equitable, and sustainable society.
