Objectives

Being an intentional community with 10 years of experience we see clearly the challenge and the necessity of changing the focus and narrative from individual approach to collective view, which include individual talents, needs, dreams and values and expand them through group engagement. Current local and global challenges (climate change, war, poverty, migration, overconsumption, etc.) cannot be solved by individuals. We need groups, collectives, communities, networks to come together and act toward a better future for us, next generations and the planet as a whole. Yet, educated in individualistic cultures, we face a lot of obstacles in collaboration and collectivism. Some come from our habits and beliefs, not worked out emotions and traumas, misunderstanding or ignorance of group dynamics and powers, others come from lack of proper tools or knowledge and experience in using those which already exist. It’s especially true among young people, who growing up in the time of pandemia and social media had even less opportunities to develop social skills, crucial in building relationships and communities. As an applying organization we have 10 years of experience (and some of our members even more) in building intentional community, living daily various conflicts, clashes, examining factors which influence our transition from “I” to “us” and experimenting with approaches which help to build a sense of belonging and will to face challenges together. Almost since the beginning we also worked with young people who come to our events, join as full members or ESC volunteers. We observe and support their struggle, learning from their feedback on how to best assist their journeys toward togetherness. It’s been already hundreds of young people with whom we shared the experience and seeing effects of it - huge change in their attitude, engagement in social and environmental issues, but above all in their sense of well being, belonging and self- esteem - we are convinced that tools and approaches we implemented and developed can serve us all in transition from individual to collective. Partner organisations, invited for this project, know Arterra well, they could observe our work and effect of it on young people and youth workers they work with and they asked us to explore - together - what can we do to bring community spirit also to other entities, not necessary ecovillages and intentional communities. How can we build community and support transition from “I” to “us” in NGO, youth organisations, and youth groups on a daily basis, even if people don’t live together? Which tools from those experimented by ecovillages since years, could be especially useful for youth work context? How can we improve our own practices to become role models of collective approach for young people we work with? Those are some of the questions we decided to explore together as partner organizations throughout the project, starting already from its creation. Objectives of the project include: - Exploring, exchanging and experimenting with tools which can empower individuals, especially young people, into seeing, realizing and implementing their full potential. - Exploring, exchanging and experimenting with tools which can bring empowered individuals together, into collective perspective, in which “I” can be transformed to “us” bringing a sense of belonging, purpose and hope that together we can better serve our societies, our planet and face current local and global challenges. Among tools which will help us to achieve the first goal are those working with personal needs, talents, dreams and values. Among tools serving the second objectives are for example Non-violent communication, Sociocracy, various ways of collective decision making, group processes and dynamics (including power dynamics). The basic need this project answer to is a need of transition from individual view, focused on “I”, “me”, “mine” to collective perspective, which include the needs, talents, dreams and passions of individuals, yet provide collaborative approach which allow individuals to grow respecting other people needs and boundaries and face together local and global challenges which cannot be solved by single people or organisations.
