Objectives

“To effectively communicate, we must understand that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and our surroundings and use this understanding as a guide to communication with others.” (A. - participant of TOAST - Training Of A Senior Trainer) For the explanation of this project idea, we start by quoting a participant of our last training TOAST - Training Of A Senior Trainer. This quote shows the importance of understanding ourselves, of reflecting how we function, of being constant learners as trainers in youth work, especially coming after the 2024 European Year of Skills. Our project TOAST was a first milestone in our youth association's work in the field of communication and training the trainers. This project got more than 200 applications and after running an impact map 8 months after the training, it became very clear that more initiatives boosting communications skills for trainers are needed. The most impactful learnings and the ones that youth workers also multiplied, were the ones connected to their identity and self-understanding in their work as trainers. The impact mapping also reported the use of nonviolent communication and outreach in their trainers' work and youth organisations. The ECHO project idea addresses the need among the trainers community, to amplify their communication skills, to get to know theories which will make them more effective communicators, but also the ones who will allow them to solve the conflicts and understand how their background influences their communication (as sender and recipient). Trainers in youth work are often missing spaces where they could boost their educational skills through learning from their peers and through giving themselves a chance to learn new tools. Communication skills are crucial in the trainers’ work, so that trainers can also use communication which leads to dialogue and peaceful coexistence, as opposed to the communication which is violent and full of fake news or disinformation. In Wonderers Collective (Co.Wonders) we have both educational and peacebuilding background, thus it is important for us to add to the development of quality and innovation in youth work, as well as to develop the methods of communication with its peaceful and nonviolent aspect. Co.Wonders is part of the Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (YPAN), where peace education is a tool to create nonviolent communities. Through our training we would like to boost the quality of youth work within our network and beyond, which we plan to do by boosting the communication skills of trainers. We have mapped the need of conducting one more project on skills on communication for trainers, after the implementation of TOAST training for trainers on communication (using the evaluation and impact mapping where 97% of the participants confirmed they have a need to learn more in the topic of communication and their trainers work. We have also mapped the needs of our YPAN, partner organisations and youth workers (all together a group of around 200 trainers), out of which 90% were eager to work on the improvement of their communication skills. With this project we will work on 3 levels of communication skills: Interpersonal communication; Communication navigating educational spaces; Communication serving for engagement in non-violent dialogue. Working on those 3 levels will allow us to create a setting where trainers can learn and test communication skills which they would directly use in their youth work educational spaces. We defined the following aim and objectives of the ECHO project. The aim of the ECHO project is to equip 18 trainers with communication skills to enable them to design and implement quality educational activities with young people towards fostering respectful interpersonal communication and engaging in non-violent dialogues in their local communities. The objectives of the project are: to develop participants understanding of the role of effective and impactful communication in trainers’ work and in youth work; to encourage participants to reflect on their own identities, values and biases and how these influence their communication approaches, through a method of Looping for Understanding and Wheel of Identity, to boost communication skills for managing group dynamics, such as Empathy blocks, Groupthink and Johari window; to map conflicts in participants surroundings which they could address by using communication skills to engage in non-violent dialogue; to equip participants with practical communication skills, including advanced nonviolent communication, enabling them to engage in non-violent dialogue in their communities; to create space for participants and their organisations to design and implement at least 5 educational activities mainstreaming the gained communication skills; to develop the cooperation among trainers and youth workers through the common development of the co.wonders Communication Canvas (CC).
