Objectives

Modern narratives of the complex global crises – climate change, armed conflicts, economic inequality, rising extremism, environmental and mental health issues – bring many young people to either despair, anxiety and societal disengagement, or to an extremist mindset. These challenges, combined with low employment rates among youth and weakening welfare systems, leave many young people depressed or angry. It is now more important than ever to show solutions and empower young people, as this generation will live through and work with these challenges. Many are increasingly interested in sustainable lifestyles and are eager to find ecologically- and socially-minded economic livelihood, and to engage in positive changes within their societies – but there are few alternatives presented to the youth. This project “Bridgedale: Beyond the Story of Crisis” takes an action responding to these challenges of the youth through building personal and professional capacity of youth workers. The project is particularly aimed at those working with marginalised youth, even more subjected to the current challenges. The training employs the Bridgedale methodology created before in the Erasmus+ KA2 partnership. The Bridgedale is a comprehensive toolkit comprising 16 domains of sustainability with 80+ experiential activities inspired by grass-root solutions and providing tools for learning about modern challenges and possible alternatives, encouraging constructive engagement in the society. It is designed for youth, depicting a virtual town of solutions to the modern crises, exploring four key areas of sustainability – ecology, society, economy, and culture – through experiential tools: games, workshops, personal journeys and story-telling, creating profound learning journeys. The methodology is outlined in 300+ pages manual available online, but the training provides first-hand experience, strong inspiration and empowerment, and inclusive facilitation methods to work with the toolkit. The training takes place in Lakabe Ecovillage showcasing some of the approaches outlined in Bridgedale, such as local sustainable enterprises, organic food production and closed cycle, engaged citizens, ecological solutions, solidarity and inclusion, community, and many more. Lakabe as a host provides a mindset-changing example of what citizens can do. The project tackles the needs expressed by partner organisations through enabling an experiential transformative learning space for youth workers, providing elements of many informal and non-formal learning methodologies included in Bridgedale, and equipping youth workers with an extensive toolkit, authentic facilitation techniques and developing personal attitudes which help them to respond to the youths’ urge to comprehend, overcome and navigate through the crises on different levels. Together with its virtual components, the project builds capacity of youth workers to help the youth navigate beyond the sense of crisis, to relate constructively to the modern challenges and to engage in societal actions and economic activities in an inclusive and empowered way, to shape their own lives and become active citizens contributing to a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable future for all. The training is particularly aimed for the youth workers involved with “marginal youth” which actively rejects current educational or labor opportunities, and for youth from discriminated social groups, leveling up their participation in the society. Through the youth workers, the project equips youth with necessary support, knowledge, personal and social development, enhancing constructive and inclusive attitudes, empowering active citizenship and encouraging sustainable choices in their lives, economic activities and societal participation in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals. All in all, the main objective of this project are: - equip youth workers with innovative tools to help young people navigate through crises and constructively engage in society and change-making - provide methodologies for educational, professional and personal development of youth workers, strengthening skills and competencies in the field - build capacity of youth workers to work constructively with complex topics of the climate change, ecological, societal, and economic challenges, inspiring youth to engage in solutions - empower green entrepreneurial mindset and improve values-based livelihood, particularly for rural areas - foster inclusion and solidarity, prevent discrimination - encourage youth participation in democracy - promote international cooperation and European values, like active citizenship, solidarity, and respect for diversity, and to support eastern periphery of Europe in mainstreaming these values.
