Objectives

"Peace appeals to the hearts; studies to the brain. Both are needed, indeed indispensable. But equally indispensable is a valid link between brain and heart." - Johan Galtung Conflicts and social tensions have always been present throughout history, but today, the rise of disinformation and polarization have intensified divisions in our societies. The dominant narratives around conflicts often reinforce narratives of confrontation and hatred instead of promoting understanding and peace. In this context, it is urgent to provide tools that allow conflicts to be transformed through innovative approaches that encourage dialogue and peacebuilding. Beyond the Lenses was born from the need to explore new methodologies for conflict transformation, combining non-formal education with the production of audiovisual materials. The documentary becomes a powerful tool to change narratives, make marginalized perspectives visible and foster empathy around conflict situations. The aim of this project is to train 22 young people, youth workers and leaders, filmmakers, writers and artists in the use of documentary film as a tool for conflict transformation, peace building and the promotion of Human Rights at local and international level. We will do this with a basic course on conflict transformation in Madrid, which will be followed by a course on alternative narratives in Cyprus, an island divided by conflict and which will serve as a context to better understand the divisive dynamics but above all the success stories of cooperation and bi-community work. Objectives: : To provide youth workers with skills in documentary production and train them to use this knowledge in the field of conflict transformation, peace building and the promotion of Human Rights. To deepen the understanding of key concepts such as peace, violence, conflict and Human Rights. To promote civic participation through the creation of alternative narratives that challenge stereotypes and reinforce social cohesion. Identify and analyse social issues that can be effectively addressed through the use of audiovisual tools. Develop skills in non-violent communication, conflict transformation techniques and emotional literacy. Provide practical experience in the documentary creation process, including the pre-production, production and post-production phases. Facilitate the production of at least three documentary chapters focusing on conflict transformation. Support the design and implementation of at least five follow-up initiatives that integrate the key learnings of the project. Establish a sustainable European network of collaboration between young filmmakers and activists.
