Physical and mental health, well-beingPromoting gender equalityInclusion of marginalised young people

Objectives

In today’s interconnected world, young people face complex challenges that significantly impact their personal and social development. The dominance of social media, rising academic pressures, and increasing unemployment rates often lead to isolation, disconnection, and social exclusion. This digitally dominated environment, instead of fostering meaningful relationships, exacerbates feelings of marginalization and xenophobia. Coupled with sedentary lifestyles, these factors contribute to stereotypes and deepen social divides. One of the critical challenges is the alarming decline in physical activity levels among young people, especially girls. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2024), 81% of adolescents globally fail to meet recommended physical activity levels, with girls being disproportionately affected (85% compared to 78% of boys). In Europe, the age group most affected is teenagers aged 15 to 17, where societal norms, academic demands, and a lack of inclusive sports opportunities lead to high dropout rates from physical activities. These trends have a direct impact on physical and mental health, increasing the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and depression. For young girls, barriers to sports participation include societal expectations, prioritization of academic achievements, insufficient support from family and peers, and a lack of sports programs that address their interests. Moreover, girls often feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in mixed-gender sports environments, which discourages sustained participation. Current sports programs, such as CrossFit or yoga, often focus on individual competitiveness rather than teamwork, further alienating many young girls who value collective activities. This project aims to address these challenges by leveraging the power of sports to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for young people. The specific objectives of the project are: To promote sports as a tool for social inclusion, breaking down stereotypes and combating marginalization. To encourage healthier lifestyles by increasing youth participation in physical activity. To foster gender equality through the implementation of mixed-gender sports programs. To exchange best practices and methodologies for using sports as a catalyst for social inclusion. To raise awareness about the Erasmus+ program and its opportunities for young people. To establish sustainable partnerships for future projects focusing on sports and inclusion. Our objectives align closely with the Erasmus+ program's priorities under Key Action 1, focusing on empowering young people, fostering intercultural understanding, and promoting European citizenship. By engaging young people aged 16 to 22, particularly those at risk of social exclusion, the project will provide opportunities to build self-esteem, develop resilience, and enhance social and intercultural competencies.
