Objectives

In the heart of the ancient rose-red city of Petra, where echoes of forgotten civilizations still whisper through sandstone cliffs, a new story is waiting to be told—one written by the voices of young dreamers, artists, and changemakers. Echoes of the Earth: Empowering Youth Through Storytelling and Sustainability is not just a youth exchange; it is a call to rediscover our shared history, reimagine our collective future, and rekindle the relationship between culture and nature. For 8 immersive days, participants from diverse backgrounds will step into the footsteps of the Nabataeans, embracing Petra’s ancient role as a meeting ground of civilizations. Within this breathtaking landscape, where trade routes once converged and ideas flowed freely, young people will find inspiration in the wisdom of the past to forge solutions for today’s global challenges. At its heart, Echoes of the Earth is about the intersection of storytelling and sustainability—a space where creative expression meets ecological consciousness. Through theater, performance, creative writing, and landscape painting, participants will explore the intricate connections between cultural heritage and environmental stewardship. They will learn how indigenous knowledge, ancient wisdom, and creative storytelling can be powerful tools in addressing today’s social and ecological challenges. Guided by local elders, artists, and environmentalists, participants will delve into the Nabataean genius—a civilization that blended influences from across the ancient world, crafting an architectural and engineering marvel that still stands today. Participants will uncover the ingenuity of ancient water management systems, from sophisticated rock-cut channels to hidden cisterns that sustained life in the desert, and reflect on how these practices can inspire modern-day solutions for water conservation and climate resilience. The land itself will become a teacher, as they explore the region’s indigenous knowledge on plants and medicinal herbs, deepening their connection to the wisdom embedded in the landscape. But this journey is also deeply personal. In the stillness of the desert, under the glow of candlelit canyons, participants will reflect on their role as change makers. Through deep discussions, storytelling circles, and shared creative expressions, they will cultivate leadership, intercultural dialogue, and a renewed sense of responsibility toward their own communities and the planet. We believe that storytelling is not just a tool for expression—it is a force for transformation. By weaving together narratives of the past and present, we empower young people to take ownership of their own stories, to give voice to the unheard, and to imagine new possibilities for the future. In Petra, we will not only tell stories; we will listen—to the land, to the wisdom of indigenous peoples, and to one another. Participants will learn how cultures have always been shaped by the environments that sustain them, and how, in turn, we must now take responsibility for sustaining our planet. Beyond inspiration, this experience is a movement toward action. Young people will not only gain awareness of environmental and cultural challenges but will be equipped with the skills and confidence to address them. More than passive observers, they will become active participants in Petra’s unfolding story—reviving its cultural spirit through performances and art, co-creating with the local Bedouin community, and envisioning new ways to honour and protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey will culminate in an immersive artistic experience, where the participants’ creative expressions will take center stage— contributing to the enchanting “Petra by Night” experience, illuminating the ancient city with music, poetry, and storytelling that breathes new life into its timeless beauty. But the impact of Echoes of the Earth will not end in Petra. We want participants to return home with more than memories—we want them to leave with a sense of responsibility, a deepened connection to the Earth, and the tools to create change. They will carry the spirit of Petra forward, applying what they have learned to their own communities, igniting new conversations about sustainability, and inspiring others to protect and cherish the natural and cultural heritage that surrounds them. As we weave together stories, art, environmental consciousness, and ancient wisdom, our voices do not fade—they echo to guide the path for generations to come. "Echoes of the Earth: Empowering Youth Through Storytelling and Sustainability" is more than a project. It is a homecoming to the roots of human connection, a reclamation of the past to build a better future, and an invitation to co-author a new chapter in the story of Petra.
