Objectives

The REACT (Responsible Environmental Action for Civic Transformation) project was created in response to two urgent global challenges: environmental degradation and youth disengagement from civic life. Across the world, communities are facing increasing threats from deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable consumption patterns. Guadeloupe and Romania, the two participating regions, are no exception. Guadeloupe struggles with deforestation, water mismanagement, and waste disposal issues, while Romania faces challenges related to illegal logging, air pollution, and inefficient recycling systems. These environmental concerns demand immediate and sustained action, especially from the younger generation, who will inherit these challenges. At the same time, many young people, especially those facing geographical, economic, or educational barriers, feel disconnected from civic engagement and disempowered when it comes to influencing decision-making processes. In geographically isolated areas such as Guadeloupe, many young people are unaware of the opportunities available to them within the European Union, leading to a lack of participation in European initiatives and democratic life. Recognizing these issues, the REACT project aims to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to actively contribute to sustainability efforts and civic engagement in their communities. The project provides practical learning experiences, allowing participants not only to understand environmental and social challenges but also to develop concrete solutions and engage as changemakers in their local and European communities. The project will bring together 24 young people from Romania and Guadeloupe for two youth exchanges designed to foster green skills, active citizenship, and intercultural learning. The project will also contribute to the capacity building of both partner organizations, with a particular focus on IDL, a newcomer to the Erasmus+ framework. Through this project, IDL will gain experience in managing international youth mobilities, strengthening its ability to design and implement European projects. By working alongside EIVA, an experienced Erasmus+ organization, IDL will receive mentorship and guidance on project coordination, non-formal education methodologies, and the administrative requirements of the program. This exchange of knowledge will enhance IDL’s expertise in youth work, allowing the organization to expand its educational offer and create new international opportunities for young people in Guadeloupe. The objectives of the project are: O1: Develop green skills related to the circular economy among 24 young people from Romania and Guadeloupe over a period of 8 months. O2: Stimulate active citizenship among 24 young people from Romania and Guadeloupe, empowering them to take action in their communities over 8 months. O3:Until the end of the project, enable cross-border collaboration between the two partner organizations, consolidating staff capacity and expanding their ability to create learning experiences for young people through European youth projects. Sub-objectives: SO1: Create and facilitate a non-formal learning framework to develop competencies, attitudes, and environmental awareness among 24 young people from Romania and Guadeloupe for a period of 8 months. SO2: Empower 24 youths from two cultural backgrounds, helping them enhance their personal and professional skills during the mobilities. The R.E.A.C.T. project aligns with best practices in youth work by: Providing access to international mobility for young people with fewer opportunities, particularly those from rural, economically disadvantaged, and geographically isolated areas. Using non-formal education methods to make learning engaging and practical, allowing participants to develop essential life skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and leadership. Encouraging young people to take initiative and lead activities, ensuring that they are not passive recipients of knowledge but active co-creators of the learning process. Fostering a sense of European belonging, particularly for participants from Guadeloupe, by making them aware of their role as European citizens and the opportunities available through the Erasmus+ program. Strengthening intercultural dialogue, enabling young people to work with peers from different backgrounds, breaking down stereotypes, and promoting mutual understanding. By the end of the project, young participants will gain practical environmental skills related to circular economy and an understanding of civic engagement, they will also gain confidence in their ability to influence change.
