Objectives

The project "Connecting Young People from Working-Class Neighbourhoods with Local Politics: Building Dialogue in Toulouse" was born from a situation we regularly encounter through SportUnity's work with young people. Many young people, particularly those living in the La Reynerie and Le Mirail neighbourhoods of Toulouse, feel disconnected from democratic life, have limited knowledge of how public institutions work and often believe that their voices are not heard. At the same time, they are highly exposed to fake news, disinformation and hate speech circulating on social media. Our ambition was to rebuild trust by offering a participatory programme based on non-formal education, dialogue and the values promoted through sport. We wanted to help young people develop their critical thinking skills, better understand how local democracy works, meet local decision-makers in an open and non-partisan setting, and work together to develop proposals aimed at improving life in their neighbourhoods and their city. Beyond increasing knowledge, our main objective was to help young people realise that their ideas matter, that they can actively contribute to their communities and that every young person, regardless of their background or personal circumstances, has a role to play in democratic life.
