Media literacy and tackling disinformation

Objectives

We wanted to carry out this project because students (from several different grades and on multiple occasions) have approached the school psychologist during the Internet safety workshops she held with the same complaint – Students felt like no one is developing their critical thinking skills when it comes to Internet usage. Students know that they should not trust everything they see on the Internet but they are not sure which parts should they trust? They don’t know. They insisted that they need education on how to better use social media and media in general. With this in mind, the main goal of the project was to equip young people with media literacy skills by enhancing their critical thinking and responsible engagement with both mass media and social media. Objectives of the project were created based on identified needs and they were the following: Issue/Need: Promote critical thinking in young people regarding media headlines and content Objective: We equiped participants with critical thinking skills that enable them to question and assess media messages independently. Participants were able to evaluate the truthfulness and accuracy of media headlines and content. They were empowered to make informed decisions and resist manipulation. Issue/Need: Foster personal awareness and self-reflection on social media usage in young people. Objective: Develop personal awareness and self-reflection on social media usage in young people. Participants developed a sense of responsibility and ethical behavior in participants concerning their online presence, guiding them to contribute positively to the digital landscape and combat the spread of misinformation.
