Objectives

The project "MY FUTURE – Creating a Better Tomorrow" was created with the aim of empowering young people, especially those with fewer opportunities, increasing their employability, improving their quality of life, and giving them the opportunity to enhance their communication, social, and other life skills. Young people placed in foster families, young people with disabilities, and young people with lower socio-economic status often face challenges such as underdeveloped communication and public speaking skills, poor social skills, and low self-confidence and self-esteem. A particularly significant issue arises when young people complete formal education and need to find employment, as the lack of these skills makes it more difficult for them to search for jobs, succeed in job interviews, and adapt to the work environment. The process of becoming independent is challenging for all young people, even for those who have family support, but it is especially difficult for young people from foster families. Upon turning eighteen, foster youth must leave their foster families and become independent, and at that moment they are at particularly high risk of social exclusion, unemployment, and poverty. Furthermore, young people with disabilities also belong to a marginalized group in society that faces difficulties in employment and independent living, and they are often, like foster youth, victims of discriminatory behavior within their communities. Therefore, the project "MY FUTURE – Creating a Better Tomorrow" was also focused on raising awareness within the community and the wider public about discrimination and stereotypes that young people with fewer opportunities face daily. Through project activities, we aimed to encourage the community and the broader public to become a source of support and motivation for these young people in their job search and everyday lives. The main themes of the project included preparing young people for employment (setting short-term, medium-term, and long-term SMART goals, writing a CV, simulating selection procedures and job interviews, and creating a career plan), improving communication and public speaking skills (communication styles, verbal and non-verbal communication, self-presentation in job interviews, argumentation and critical thinking, active listening), enhancing social skills, recognizing personal capacities, strengthening self-esteem and self-confidence, breaking stereotypes and prejudices about young people with fewer opportunities, and encouraging youth volunteering to gain experience and new skills. Through non-formal learning, young people acquired essential knowledge and life skills that will increase their employability, improve their adaptation to the workplace, and consequently enhance their quality of life. The project was based on a youth exchange between Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, including young people with fewer opportunities such as those in alternative care, young people with developmental difficulties and behavioral disorders, and young volunteers active in their communities. The project included both young people still in formal education and those who had completed their education and were seeking employment. During the exchange, participants took part in various workshops: they worked individually on their career plans with the support of facilitators, delivered speeches in small groups, participated in debates and simulated job interviews, and presented group work, which enabled them to improve their communication and public speaking skills. Networking-oriented activities allowed young people to get to know each other and collaborate already during the planning phase of the youth exchange. During the exchange, they also attended workshops on volunteering and discrimination against marginalized groups and communicated and cooperated daily with people with disabilities, which further enhanced their social skills. Part of the project activities was also focused on preserving young people’s mental health. Through workshops, participants learned how to cope with stress, recognize signs of depression, and seek timely and appropriate help. Empowered in this way, young people will more easily and successfully navigate the employment process and adapt to independent living, which was the main goal of this project.
