Objectives

The idea for "Green Horizons" originated from a needs analysis conducted via a questionnaire submitted to the followers and volunteers of the involved organizations months before the project. The results painted a clear picture of the target group's needs, revealing that despite the recent media hype, most young people feel poorly informed about environmental protection and lack the practical know-how to act responsibly and sustainably. Specifically, the survey highlighted the following needs and gaps among our young people regarding environmental behavior: • Irresponsible consumption of resources (e.g., wasting water and energy, overusing appliances, excessive shopping). • Lack of healthy and sustainable eating habits (e.g., significant food waste, high consumption of junk food). • Unfamiliarity with the "3Rs" philosophy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). • An underdeveloped environmental consciousness in daily habits (e.g., infrequent use of public transport or bicycles, limited recycling efforts). • A desire for more green spaces combined with a tendency to complain rather than act to create or protect them. Beyond these environmental themes, the analysis also identified deeper personal and social needs of the participants: • A lack of safe and inclusive spaces to meet, socialize, and share personal and community experiences. • A need to develop a personal "green" consciousness and identity. • Limited opportunities for intercultural connection, leading to the persistence of stereotypes and prejudices. • Poor knowledge of and access to youth mobility programs and the opportunities offered by the EU. • A need for personal and professional growth opportunities to build soft skills. To directly address these needs, "Green Horizons" aimed to achieve the following objectives by creating an inclusive, non-formal learning environment where participants could share and learn from one another: For the Participants: 1. Increase participants' practical knowledge of ecological challenges and sustainable practices (such as the 3Rs, energy saving, and sustainable food choices), directly countering the lack of information and poor habits identified. 2. Equip young people with key soft skills (e.g., self-awareness, personal responsibility, empowerment, and problem-solving) to boost their self-confidence and prepare them for active citizenship and eco-activism. 3. Enable participants to rediscover and value the environmental and cultural heritage of their own and the partner countries, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility. 4. Foster social inclusion, intercultural friendship, and unity by providing a space for collaboration and appreciation of diversity, thereby actively reducing stereotypes and prejudices among the young people from Italy, Hungary, Romania, and Turkey. 5. Promote youth mobility and a European identity by introducing participants to non-formal learning and the opportunities of the EU, bringing them closer to their local organizations and strengthening their sense of belonging to the European community. For the Partner Organizations: • Enhance organizational capacity: To improve the partners' ability to manage intercultural projects, gaining new expertise in environmental topics, group management, and project design that can be replicated in future local and international activities. • Strengthen international networking: To build sustainable and lasting partnerships with organizations from different nations for future collaborations. • Increase local visibility and reach: To attract new followers and supporters by disseminating the results of this high-impact international event.
