Our project Youth – Reaching Across Europe (YRAE) was implemented to ensure that our students, could access a DiscoverEU travel experience on an equal footing with their peers. Many of the participants face social, economic, educational and personal barriers that significantly limit their opportunities to travel, participate in international learning, or engage confidently in new environments. Without targeted support, these young people would be unlikely to apply for or participate in DiscoverEU independently. The primary objective of the project was to promote social inclusion and equal access to European mobility opportunities by removing practical, financial and psychological barriers to participation. This was achieved through structured group travel, intensive preparation, close mentoring, and the presence of experienced accompanying staff throughout the journey. A second key objective was to support personal development and confidence building among participants. Through independent travel, navigating unfamiliar cities, and participating in shared group activities, the project aimed to strengthen participants’ self-esteem, resilience, communication skills and sense of autonomy. Particular emphasis was placed on developing practical life skills such as budgeting, time management, decision-making and the use of public transport. The project also sought to enhance intercultural awareness and European identity. By travelling through multiple European countries and engaging with different cultures, histories and communities, participants were encouraged to develop openness, tolerance and a stronger sense of belonging to Europe. Visits to cultural and historical sites supported learning around shared European values such as democracy, diversity, inclusion and solidarity. Another important objective was to promote sustainable and responsible travel. Participants were supported to understand the environmental impact of travel choices, with a strong focus on rail and public transport, environmentally conscious behaviours, and reflection on sustainability throughout the journey. Finally, the project aimed to recognise and validate learning outcomes through reflection activities and the use of Youthpass, ensuring that participants could clearly identify the skills and competences they developed and apply them to their future education, employment and personal goals. At organisational level, the project also aimed to strengthen Youthreach staff capacity in delivering inclusive European mobility projects and embedding international learning opportunities within youth work practice.
