Objectives

The “Rhythm and Music for Change” project aimed to create an educational and intercultural experience in which music served as a tool for personal growth, social inclusion and active citizenship. Through musical improvisation and the ‘Rhythm with Signs’ method, participants found themselves in a safe and stimulating environment in which to develop artistic, communicative and social skills, overcoming initial economic, geographical and educational barriers. Music served as the universal language that united the participants, enabling them to explore their creative potential and gain confidence in their abilities. The project thus strengthened the young people’s sense of belonging to an intercultural community, developing their awareness of being an active part of a group and of having something unique to offer. Our objectives were: 1 To promote inclusion and accessibility to music Through “Rhythm with Signs”, a method that allows for group musical improvisation without the need for prior technical skills, we ensured that all participants could take part in a collective performance, regardless of their musical or educational background. This approach helped break down the barriers that limited access to the arts and demonstrated that creativity can be an opportunity for everyone. 2 To develop key skills through non-formal education The project encouraged experiential learning and continuous self-assessment. Through active participation in music workshops, reflection sessions and team-building activities, the young people developed transferable skills such as teamwork, active listening, leadership, stress management and intercultural communication. And the YouthPass was the main tool for helping participants recognise and value the skills acquired during the exchange. 3 Enhancing youth empowerment and active participation The young people were the driving force behind the project. From the preparatory phase onwards, they played an active role in defining activities, managing learning sessions and organising dissemination events in their home countries. This made them more aware of their own abilities and helped them develop self-confidence, transforming them into agents of change within their communities. 4 Creating a European network of young artists and future youth workers The project strengthened the network between partners and participants, fostering long-term collaboration among young people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The bonds formed during the exchange continued through follow-up activities and local workshops organised after the project, enabling the expansion of the community of young people who use musical improvisation as a tool for social cohesion and inclusion. 5 Raising awareness of Erasmus+ opportunities During the project, we dedicated specific sessions to exploring the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme, encouraging participants to discover new possibilities for youth mobility, training and volunteering. By sharing experiences and first-hand accounts, we made young people more aware of future opportunities. We achieved these objectives through ‘Rhythm with Signs’, which allowed participants to experience the importance of cooperation and non-verbal communication – fundamental elements for developing artistic skills, but also for strengthening self-confidence and the ability to work in a team. The two final events in Capranica and Vejano represented the culmination of the experience. Participants performed in front of the local community, actively involving children and students in the musical creation. These moments allowed us to experience the power of art as a universal language and to strengthen the bond between young people of different nationalities. Following the project, participants organised local workshops, continuing the ‘Rhythm with Signs’ method in their own communities. These events ensured the project’s continuity, enabling the skills acquired to be shared with a wider audience. Through ‘Rhythm and Music for Change’, we have demonstrated that music is a powerful tool for social inclusion, capable of creating authentic bonds and transforming cultural differences into a resource.
