Disconnect to Reconnect: Empowering Social Inclusion Offline is a youth exchange promoted by StoryRec and its partners, aimed at young people who are at risk of social exclusion, facing mental health issues, and experiencing confusion due to excessive use of technology and social media. Today, young people in Europe are increasingly immersed in a digital world that limits their ability to connect authentically with themselves and others. The dependence on smartphones, social media, and video games has created an invisible barrier between the real world and the virtual one, fueling anxiety, social isolation, and a sense of inadequacy that hinders their personal development. The pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the ongoing economic crisis have worsened this phenomenon, increasing feelings of disorientation and the tendency to escape into the digital world as the only way of coping. According to a report by the WHO from September 2024, quoted by Euronews, 11% of young Europeans show problematic use of social media, and 12% are at risk of gaming addiction, with direct consequences on mental health and social participation. The lack of effective regulation and targeted educational strategies makes it urgent to intervene with awareness programs and healthy socialization alternatives. Locally, through surveys and interviews, we have gathered direct testimonies highlighting the need for disconnection spaces and educational programs that help young people rediscover their capabilities, self-confidence, and social skills beyond the screen. Project Objectives and Impact on Youth Work: In response to these challenges, StoryRec and its partners propose an immersive experience that promotes self-awareness, authentic connection with others, and the strengthening of social skills through non-formal education methodologies. The project revolves around five main objectives: Raising awareness about responsible technology use: Promote greater awareness regarding the proper use of digital devices to encourage more meaningful interactions. Creating spaces for disconnection: Encourage healthy living practices by creating an environment that fosters authentic experiences in order to break down the comfort zone created by technology. Building foundations for empathetic relationships: Establish the foundations for building empathetic relationships that can extend into local communities, creating a supportive environment. Exploring creativity: Encourage participants to discover themselves and develop their creative side through offline activities, away from digital distractions. Promoting intercultural dialogue: Enhance dialogue between different cultures through the promotion of European programs and cultural exchange activities and interactions. Through these objectives, DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT aims to raise awareness of personal well-being and provide participants with the tools and skills necessary to develop healthier habits. The project aligns with the Erasmus+ priorities of social inclusion and responsible digital transition, using youth work as a driver for change: non-formal education, experiential learning, and participatory methodologies will allow young people to gain awareness and autonomy, building a support network that can extend to their communities.
