Objectives

“One Thousand and One Nights” is a project inspired by the famous collection of stories from the Middle East and Asia, aiming to bring cultures closer through myths and legends. This exchange originates as a follow-up to a KA2 project titled “4F” (Fast Fashion, Fast Forward), in which some members of the informal group participated. In particular, a group of young people contributed to the creation of a comic called “Cool with Brain,” designed to raise awareness among young people about the environmental impact of fast fashion. The use of a fantasy story and illustrations sparked great curiosity and had a strong impact on the target audience. The creative writing and comic workshops conducted within this initiative highlighted the effectiveness of these tools, not only for educational purposes but also to promote social inclusion and stimulate creativity and imagination. In some workshops, young people from different cultures shared stories and legends from their countries of origin, emphasizing the educational importance of fairy tales and legends, which have inspired many works by Disney and Marvel. The project focuses on three main objectives: To bring cultures closer through myths and legends. To educate young people to read, promoting a moderate use of social media. To stimulate the imagination and creativity of young people. Intercultural Dialogue and Exchange Due to strong migration flows, cities are becoming increasingly multi-ethnic; however, cultural integration does not always follow. In schools, young children of immigrants make up between 11% and 15% of the student population, according to ISTAT data. These young people are often victims of bullying and marginalization, with a significant percentage choosing to drop out of school. Intercultural dialogue helps overcome prejudices and facilitates mutual acceptance. A positive example is the program implemented by the Canadian government, which, in response to violence against ethnic minorities, introduced dialogue initiatives based on tradition and folklore, achieving remarkable results in reducing acts of violence. Encouraging Young People to Read Reading books is fundamental for cognitive, emotional, and social development. It promotes concentration, enriches vocabulary, improves memory, and stimulates critical thinking. Additionally, it reduces stress, promotes creativity, and fosters empathy. Reading is also a powerful tool for cultural and professional growth. However, reading habits among young Europeans vary widely. For instance, in Luxembourg, Denmark, and Estonia, over 70% of the population reads at least one book per year, while in Italy, only 35% of young people read regularly. Reading is particularly widespread among young people up to 24 years old, with 57.1% of readers in the 11-14 age range, but it tends to decrease with age. The initiative aims to encourage young people to read more as an alternative to excessive use of social media. Imagination and Creativity Through myths and legends, the project aims to stimulate the imagination and creativity of young people. This ability is crucial for developing initiative, resilience, and courage. The initiative particularly targets NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) young people, and those uncertain about their life path. According to ISTAT data, over a third of Italian youth are NEET, and 80% do not have a clear life plan for the next five years. Increasing imagination and creativity can be a crucial engine to help them find direction and develop a more positive vision for the future.
