Objectives

The project Untie the Knot: Storytelling for Resilience and Social Change seeks to strengthen youth work practices by equipping youth workers with innovative tools to help young people express themselves, engage with their communities, and advocate for social change. Through storytelling, we aim to break the barriers of fear, self-doubt, and exclusion that often silence young people, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. In many cultures, including Italy and Greece, the phrase “I have a knot in my throat” symbolizes the inability to express oneself—whether due to fear, lack of confidence, or social pressure. Our project aims to untie this metaphorical knot by providing youth workers with practical storytelling methodologies to create safe spaces where young people can reclaim their voices and become active participants in their communities. From a youth work perspective, Untie the Knot focuses on five key objectives: O1: Inspiring Inclusion – We seek to create environments where young people, especially those facing exclusion, can explore their identities, share personal narratives, and connect with others in ways that foster mutual understanding and empathy. O2: Fostering Intercultural Dialogue – By encouraging the exchange of personal and cultural stories, youth workers will enable young people to build bridges between different communities, breaking down stereotypes and cultivating a more inclusive society. O3:Amplifying the Voices of Marginalized Youth – Many young people, including migrants, minorities, and LGBTQ+ youth, lack platforms for self-expression and face systemic social exclusion. By training youth workers to facilitate storytelling workshops, we will create safe and supportive spaces for these voices to be heard, empowering them to take control of their own narratives. O4:Promoting Civic Engagement and Advocacy – Storytelling is a powerful tool for raising awareness and inspiring action. By sharing stories of resilience and social change, young people will be encouraged to address the challenges they see in society and take meaningful action, whether through activism, community projects, or civic participation. O5:Enhancing Employability and Life Skills – The project also aims to develop young people’s critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and communication skills, which are highly valuable in today’s rapidly evolving job market. By fostering these competencies, we aim to improve young people’s personal and professional development. This project is not just about storytelling—it is about empowering youth workers to integrate storytelling into their daily practices to foster inclusion, intercultural understanding, and active citizenship. Youth workers will gain concrete skills in facilitating storytelling workshops, guiding young people in self-expression, and using narratives as tools for social advocacy. Untie the Knot aims to create a new generation of storytellers and active citizens who can shape a more inclusive, empathetic, and diverse society. By embedding storytelling within youth work practices, we empower young people not only to find their voices but also to use them as instruments for change—advocating for their rights, influencing public conversations, and actively participating in shaping the world around them.
