“Alternative Interventions for Youth” was born from the awareness that formal education has left a gap on social-emotional abilities development, focusing only on the mechanic learning of geography or mathematics topics. Nowadays, not only the labor market but also society is in a crisis led by the lack of ability to deal with emotions (emotional intelligence) and self- regulate. We realize that our partners and target group are facing challenges with the education and development of children, especially in the emotional field. Parents, teachers, educators, non-formal teachers, and mentors can grasp on the basic concepts of positive education, non-violent communication, and mindfulness to create a better environment for development and also the advantage of having some practical tools to deal with: conflict resolution, concentration and silence, emotional self-regulation/co-regulation, better decision making, originality, creativity and active learning. On the other hand, there are professionals with few or no tools to deal with challenges in the classroom and other educative spaces, except for shouting and bargaining, Hence they deal and suffer with stress, anxiety, and burnout. In analysis of global and local data, especially after COVID-19, we realize that non-formal education can be one of the solutions to fill the gap left by formal education around social-emotional abilities. On the research, we found that in Italy, "Education at a Glance 2023" and TALIS results indicate that 30% of teachers report high levels of stress related to the work environment, with factors such as excessive workload, lack of administrative support and classroom discipline. class being the main causes. PISA results for Italy indicate that many students face academic stress due to high expectations and rigorous assessments. There is a growing need for interventions to improve students' emotional skills, especially in areas such as empathy, emotional regulation and cooperation, which are fundamental to coping with stress and the demands of the school environment. Later in life, those life skills will be the differential aspect for professional life These common considerations brought our community and our partners to the creation of a youth workers mobility to empower educators, non-formal teachers and mentors in their journey of supporting the development of kids, be aware that emotional intelligence plays a fundamental role in every aspect of our life, not just in relationships but also workwise, developing fundamental soft skills they need in their work with youngsters. Young people need to explore and express their emotions, increase self-expression, acceptance and empathy towards other people and the environment, and become more self-aware of themselves and the decisions they take. "Alternative Interventions for Youth” was written with the common aim of giving tools that support the personal discovery and in particular of the emotional aspect of youth workers; increasing confidence in oneself and others, developing active listening and empathy and acquiring greater knowledge about emotional intelligence and practical application.
