Objectives

The project “A Journey to Inclusion” was developed with the aim of making European mobility accessible to young people who, due to economic, geographical or social barriers, would have faced greater difficulties in independently taking part in an international travel experience. Through our work with young people in the local area, and particularly through our cooperation with the De Sanctis-Galilei High School in Manduria, we had identified that travelling abroad was not a common experience for many young people and that family financial circumstances, living in a peripheral area and limited familiarity with international mobility could significantly restrict access to these opportunities. Through the project, we therefore wanted to reduce these barriers and offer participants the opportunity to discover Europe directly in a safe, inclusive and adequately supported environment. However, our aim was not simply to make a journey possible: we wanted to use mobility as an opportunity for learning, responsibility and personal growth, gradually supporting young people towards greater autonomy. One of the main objectives was to develop personal and social competences that could also be useful beyond the project, such as learning how to navigate unfamiliar places, organise travel and activities, manage time and available resources, make decisions, deal with unexpected situations, cooperate with others and live within a group for several days. We also wanted to strengthen participants’ self-confidence, adaptability and willingness to face new situations, especially among young people with little or no previous experience of international mobility. Another key dimension was intercultural learning. Through direct contact with different European countries, we wanted to encourage curiosity, openness and the ability to observe different languages, cultures, habits and ways of life without prejudice. The project therefore aimed to promote respect for diversity and to counter discrimination, intolerance, xenophobia and racism, turning travel into a concrete opportunity to experience the values of inclusion and coexistence that are at the heart of the European Union. We also wanted to strengthen participants’ sense of European belonging. For young people who had had few opportunities to experience other countries directly, travelling across Europe, using services and transport systems in different countries and discovering the cultural and historical heritage of the cities visited could make the European Union, its values and the opportunities it offers to young people more tangible. Sustainability was another central objective. We chose to place train travel at the heart of the experience, not only as a means of reaching the destinations but as an integral part of the educational journey itself. We wanted to raise participants’ awareness of more responsible ways of travelling and encourage reflection on everyday behaviours, the use of public transport, waste reduction and, more broadly, the relationship between mobility and environmental sustainability. Finally, the project aimed to develop language and digital competences through real-life situations, for example communicating abroad, asking for information, using maps, applications and travel-support tools, documenting experiences and sharing them with others. Through these objectives, we wanted DiscoverEU to become a concrete tool for inclusion, non-formal learning, European citizenship and personal growth for young people who would otherwise have had fewer opportunities to live a similar experience.
