Objectives

The project “Inclusion and Freedom: A European Journey” aims to offer disadvantaged young people the opportunity to explore new horizons, develop intercultural skills and strengthen their sense of belonging to Europe. The young people involved have chosen as their main theme to learn more about European countries that have experienced periods of dictatorship or Soviet influence. This interest stems from a curiosity to better understand how people in these countries live today and how they feel about the European Union and as European citizens. These countries offer a rich history and culture and a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities of European integration. The project will involve three groups of young people. The first group was identified in collaboration with a sports association that deals with children with special educational needs, while the other two groups were identified from beneficiaries of two youth centres that operate in disadvantaged contexts in the city of Palermo. Through the trip and interactions with European peers, the young people will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures, appreciate diversity and develop a more inclusive and tolerant mindset. This is especially relevant for youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, who often do not have the opportunity to travel and learn about other countries. During the travel experience, young participants will be encouraged to conduct interviews with local people to gather firsthand accounts and better understand the historical, social and cultural dynamics of the countries visited, broadening their horizons and developing a sense of solidarity. In addition, “travelogues” will be made in the form of audio-video and photographic material aimed at promoting the DiscoverEU action and raising awareness of other young people about the mobility opportunities offered by the European Union. The material will be shared on social media and at local events to amplify the impact of the project and inspire other young people to participate. The production of audiovisual content will not only promote the project, but also provide participants with practical skills in the use of digital technologies and visual communication. During the trips, the role of the accompanying persons will be crucial in supporting and helping young people overcome language barriers and handle crisis situations that may arise, especially for young people who have never spent long periods away from home. With their experience and expertise, accompanying persons will provide the support needed to cope with difficulties and ensure a positive and enriching experience. Their role will not be limited to practical assistance, but will also include guidance and emotional support, helping young people feel safe and develop self-confidence throughout the journey. The accompanying persons will also facilitate communication between the youth and the people they meet in the different countries, ensuring that interviews and interactions take place in an effective and respectful manner. At the end of the trip, young people will participate in individual and group reflection moments, during which they will be able to share their experiences and compare their impressions. These moments will be crucial in fostering greater awareness and understanding of different cultural and social realities, promoting personal growth and the development of intercultural competencies. Young people will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning journey and identify skills they have acquired, such as intercultural communication, teamwork skills, resilience and adaptability.
