European identity and values

Objectives

The project was developed to address the persistent challenges faced by young people, including discrimination, prejudice, social exclusion, and the lack of intercultural communication. In an increasingly multicultural Europe, these issues hinder social development and unity, contradicting the core European values of inclusion, equality, and active citizenship. Following the findings from the European social statistics, we gathered a partner consortium from Lithuania, Türkiye, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Estonia. Those countries showcase fragile and vulnerable trends related to social exclusion among young people and high unemployment rates. Therefore, “Beyond Borders: Connecting Cultures, Building Bridges” focused on strengthening the youth’s ability to communicate across cultures, challenge stereotypes, and thus support them to be a part of a more inclusive and cohesive society. The project created a safe and structured space for dialogue, cooperation, and learning through non-formal education. The goals were to: Enhance intercultural communication skills, enabling youth to interact openly and respectfully with people from different cultural, religious, social, and economic backgrounds. Reduce discrimination and prejudices by raising awareness of stereotypes and their impact, while promoting tolerance, equality, and mutual respect. Encourage critical thinking, openness, and acceptance of diverse viewpoints. Promote active participation and social responsibility among young people, engaging them in social issues faced by local and European communities. Support young people’s employability and personal development by improving their communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability skills. The goals were achieved specifically through the use of experiential and non-formal learning, such as workshops, discussions, teamwork, and collaborative activities carried out in mixed-nationality groups. These intercultural experiences increase young people’s sensitivity to cultural differences and reduce prejudices, while developing their social capabilities. The project was organised in Vilnius, Lithuania. The location was suitable as it offered historical, cultural and diverse perspectives to discover new cultures. Finally, young people have strengthened their understanding of intercultural competencies, addressing biases and prejudices. The positive change in their behaviours oriented towards the tolerant and inclusive treatment of all directly aligns with the Erasmus+ priorities of: inclusion and diversity, active citizenship and democratic participation, as well as non-formal education and youth participation.
