Objectives

The main idea behind this project is to strengthen existing relationships with our twin towns. A key focus will be promoting exchanges and communication between young people from all the countries in order to encourage dialogue and interaction between peers. Most of the young people supported by the Mondorf-les-Bains municipal youth service come from socially and financially disadvantaged families. Many of them are in precarious situations and feel disoriented, have dropped out of school and are struggling to find their place in society. At the Jugendstuff Munneref youth centre, they find advice, support and help to integrate (or reintegrate) into the world of education or work. There, they (re)learn the rules of life and acquire non-formal socio-educational skills. Young people rarely have the opportunity to discover cities other than their hometown. This exchange project between twin cities, now in its fifth year, gives them the chance not only to meet young people from other countries and cultures, but also to take part in activities that are unusual in their home country, some of which were completely unknown to them. Young people, like the other participants, have the opportunity to enjoy new experiences, learn about their personal limits and test them. The main theme of this meeting is the differences between cultures and customs, but also the importance of Luxembourg in the history of Europe, to which we all belong in part and which even constitutes a large part of our future. The means used to achieve this are sporting and cultural activities, playful discovery, interactive games and non-formal education. As some of the young people participating in this project are disadvantaged and vulnerable, mutual exchanges are of paramount importance in enabling them to discover the differences between the privileges and difficulties of each country, to regularly challenge themselves, to develop their critical thinking skills and to better understand the resources, strengths and weaknesses of their daily lives. For these young people, it is a privilege and an opportunity to travel with friends to other European countries, discover different cultures and customs and, at the same time, make new friends in a safe environment. After France, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Portugal, different young people are meeting for the fourth or even fifth time, which of course means that the bonds forged in recent years can be strengthened. It also helps the “new young participants” to integrate more quickly into the group. It is of course important to emphasise that, in addition to the bonds already forged, the young people have also found common interests and needs, which will make it easier for them to participate in the various activities. Even though some of the young people visited Luxembourg a few years ago, the organisers have ensured that these participants can also discover the country in a new and different way through new and unfamiliar activities.
