The Youth Exchange "Democracy Village" project is designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to actively participate in democratic life. The project will equip participants with an understanding of democratic systems, their role in decision-making, and the importance of active citizenship through a structured program of non-formal education, intercultural learning, and civic engagement. By implementing this project, we will create a space where young people can exchange perspectives, develop critical thinking, and gain practical experience in democracy through simulations, discussions, and field visits. From a youth work practice perspective, the primary objective of the project is to encourage civic engagement and active participation among young people. The project recognizes that many young people feel disconnected from political and decision-making processes due to a lack of accessible information, low confidence, or limited opportunities to engage with democratic structures. By sharing such experiences as a visit to the Latvian Parliament, democracy simulations, and direct interactions with local stakeholders, participants will gain first-hand insights into how democracy functions and how they can actively contribute to shaping their societies. An important goal of the project is to improve the critical thinking skills of the project's participants. We are living in a time where young people must learn to analyze information critically, question the sources, and make informed decisions. The project will include media literacy and debate exercises, ensuring that participants develop the ability to assess sources, engage in constructive discussions, and express their views with confidence. One of the most important aspects of the Youth Exchange "Democracy Village" is intercultural learning. By gathering young people from Latvia, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, and Hungary, the project creates a space where different perspectives on democracy meet. Each country has its own history, political landscape, and social challenges, meaning that participants come with unique viewpoints shaped by their realities. Working in international teams, debating ideas, and analyzing democracy from different angles will push them to question assumptions, challenge biases, and appreciate the complexity of democratic values. This kind of exchange doesn’t just increase knowledge—it teaches real understanding and respect, reinforcing the idea that democracy bases itself on diverse voices and shared responsibility. This project is designed to give all young people an equal chance to participate, regardless of their background. Whether they come from different economic situations, cultures, or geographic areas, every participant will have the opportunity to engage, share their perspective, and be heard. Democracy Village follows the Erasmus+ principle of inclusion, making sure that no one feels left out and everyone has a role in the discussions and activities. Through this Youth Exchange, we want to help young people understand democracy and feel confident taking part in it. The goal is to give them the tools and motivation to stay involved, not just during the project, but also in their schools and communities. By building their awareness, critical thinking, and leadership skills, they will be better prepared to participate in decision-making processes and take responsibility for shaping the world around them. This experience will stay with them long after the exchange ends, encouraging them to speak up, take action, and contribute to a more democratic and inclusive society.
